X-Men is a film franchise based on the comic series of the same name from Marvel Verlag , created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby . The films were distributed until 2020 by the film studio 20th Century Fox , which secured the film rights from Marvel in 1994.

Bryan Singer directed the first X-Men film (2000) and its sequel X-Men 2 (2003), while Brett Ratner on X-Men: The Last Stand led (2006), the completion of the first trilogy, directed. After the commercial success of the first films, each of which was able to significantly surpass the box office results of its respective predecessor, several offshoots were released. These include X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), X-Men: First Decision (2011) and Wolverine: Weg des Kriegers (2013). X-Men: Future Is Past , a sequel to X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men: First Choice , came out in 2014. Deadpool and X-Men: Apocalypse both followed in 2016. In 2017, Logan - The Wolverine was the third single film adaptation of the title character and the tenth part of the series. Deadpool 2 , the sequel to the film Deadpool , was released a year later . The films X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019) and The New Mutants (2020) round off the film series. In addition to the X-Men cinema series, there is also a television film from 1996 entitled Generation X , based on the characters from the X-Men universe.

X-Men , X-Men 2 , X-Men: First Choice , Wolverine: Path of the Warrior , X-Men: Future Is Past , Deadpool , Logan - The Wolverine and Deadpool 2 received mostly positive reviews from critics, while X-Men : The Last Stand , X-Men Origins: Wolverine, and X-Men: Apocalypse received mixed reviews. Film critics particularly praise the realistic tones and subtexts of the film series, which deals with discrimination and intolerance, while Deadpool was particularly praised for its loyalty to the comic and its R-rated version.

With total grossing over $ 6 billion, the X-Men series is currently the fifth most successful series of all time.

The mutants Wolverine and Rogue are attacked by Sabretooth, who is also a mutant, but then rescued by the so-called "X-Men" Cyclops and Storm. They bring them to the “Institute for Gifted Youngsters”, which was created by Charles Xavier, alias Professor X, a telepath, to promote and train young mutants. He suspects the Auschwitz survivor Erik Lensherr behind the attack, who is now the mutant Magneto. The "Brotherhood of Mutants" he founded, consisting of him, Mystique, Sabretooth and Toad, has set itself the task of making the leaders of the world mutants, as they see them as the progress of evolution and normal people only as a threat . Because of this, they kidnapped Senator Kelly and activated his mutations. Kelly manages to escape to the X-Men, who have to watch him die shortly afterwards due to his artificial mutation. In the decisive battle, the X-Men around Wolverine, Professor X, Cyclops, Jean Gray, Storm and Rogue can defeat the "Brotherhood of Mutants" and hand Magneto over to justice.

After a failed assassination attempt on the US president by the mutant Nightcrawler, William Stryker is tasked with fighting the mutants. For this reason, Stryker finds out about Charles Xavier's "Institute for Gifted Youngsters" from the prisoner Magneto. While Storm and Jean Gray can track down the mutant Nightcrawler, Stryker storms Xavier's school, confiscates the Cerebro and takes Cyclops and Professor X prisoner. The other X-Men Wolverine, Rogue, Iceman and Pyro, on the other hand, can escape and later meet Storm, Jean Gray and Nightcrawler. Meanwhile, Mystique was able to free the captured Magneto from his prison, whereupon they both join the X-Men to take on the fight against Stryker. Stryker has since brainwashed Professor X into using the Cerebro to kill every mutant on the planet. It turns out that he was the mastermind behind the assassination, as his son is himself a mutant and he drove his mother, Stryker's wife, to suicide. Magneto and Mystique influence Professor X in such a way that he is now supposed to kill every non-mutant, and then flee. The X-Men then manage to free Professor X from captivity and escape with the help of Jean Gray, who sacrifices herself for the others. Then they can convince the US president of Stryker's guilt.

The man reveals himself lying dying, however, as James' actual father. In the following years James took the name "Logan" and joined a mutant team with his new half-brother Victor Creed alias Sabretooth under the leadership of William Stryker, but left shortly afterwards. A few years later Logan lived with his girlfriend Kayla Silverfox until Creed killed her. Logan then accepts an offer from Stryker to fight Creed, who has already killed several members of Stryker's team. For this reason, Stryker coats Logan's skeleton with the metal adamantium until Logan realizes that Stryker wants to erase his memory too, and flees. From former teammates he learns that Stryker has a prison island for mutants, which is why Logan locates Gambit, who was the only one who was able to escape from said island. There he meets Kayla, who was forced by Stryker to fake her death, otherwise he would have killed her sister Emma Frost. Logan can defeat the also present Creed, whereupon Stryker frees the mutant Deadpool to stop Logan. In the final battle Logan can defeat Deadpool with the surprising help of Creed and free the captured mutants, including Cyclops. Kayla, however, is shot by Stryker, who is arrested a little later by the military police.

In 1962, Schmidt, who now calls himself Sebastian Shaw, founded the so-called "Hellfire Club", consisting of mutants, which puts a US officer under such pressure that he should trigger World War III, thereby making the mutants the dominant one Species become. For this reason, the CIA is recruiting Professor X to help arrest Shaw. When Erik, who now calls himself Magneto, comes in, Shaw and his allies escape, while Professor X saves Magneto's life. Both recruit and train more mutants and together track down Emma Frost, an ally of Shaw, through whom they learn that Shaw wants to trigger the Cuban Missile Crisis. Originally planned films

  • In July 2013, 20th Century Fox announced that Jeff Wadlow was currently working on a script for an adaptation of the X-Men spin-off comic book series X-Force and that Lauren Shuler Donner would be responsible for production. Mark Millar , 20th Century Fox's creative adviser on comic book adaptations, revealed that the X-Force team consists of five protagonists. Shortly after the theatrical release of Deadpool , Ryan Reynolds revealed that he could take on a bigger role in an X-Force movie, emphasizing that X-Force filming was his top priority. Simon Kinberg later explained that X-Force should be shot in an R-rated version. It was also announced that Kinberg is currently working on a new script version. In November 2016 it was announced that a third Deadpool film was currently in development and that the X-Force team would play a central role in it.
  • In May 2014, Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed that Channing Tatum had been given the lead role in a planned comic book adaptation about the character Remy LeBeau / Gambit . In October 2014 Josh Zetumer was hired to write a screenplay based on the comics by Chris Claremont . Donner, Kinberg, Reid Carolin and Tatum are responsible for producing the film . In June 2015 Rupert Wyatt was officially introduced as director, but he left the project in September 2015 due to scheduling conflicts. In November of the same year Doug Liman was presented as the successor director. In August 2016 Liman also left the project in order to be able to shoot the DC film Dark Universe . According to Kinberg, shooting will start at the end of 2016, while the main shoot will take place in early 2017. After nothing happened for a long time, it was announced in February 2017 that filming would start in early 2018. In mid-May 2018, Kinberg said in an interview with Variety.com that they were still looking for the right director, but that they were planning to start shooting at the end of summer 2018 so that the film could open in theaters in summer 2019. In September 2018, however, the start date was postponed to March 2020. After Disney took over 20th Century Fox , plans for the film were finally set.
  • In October 2017, Josh Boone announced that The New Mutants would be a trilogy and that he already had plans for two more films. However, 20th Century Fox would like to wait and see whether the first film can convince at the box office and make possible sequels dependent on it. Furthermore, Boone revealed that the characters Karma and Warlock should appear in the second part.
  • In February 2017, James Mangold stated that there was an opportunity to have Laura Kinney aka X-23, introduced in Logan - The Wolverine , appear in other films. In October 2017, Mangold announced in an interview that he and Craig Kyle were working on a script for the possible film.
  • In November 2017, it was announced that Fox was working on a film about the mutant Multiple Man. James Franco is supposed to play the main character, while Allan Heinberg writes the script and Kinberg and Franco produce the film.

The first X-Men movie in North America had the biggest opening weekend of any movie in July, while X-Men 2 and X-Men: The Last Stand had their fourth biggest opening weekend in May. For Deadpool , it was the best start of a film in February and the best start for an R-rated film . The records for the first three X-Men films have since been beaten by other films. The next three X-Men films after X-Men: The Last Resistance each had lower opening weekends than their previous films and could not register any records. In North America, Deadpool is the most successful film of the series and also marks the strongest opening weekend for an X-Men film. Outside of North America, X-Men: The Future Is Past had the strongest weekend X-Men film opener and is the series’s most successful film in that space. Worldwide recorded Deadpool 2 so far the biggest grossing X-Men series.

The X-Men film series is the second most successful film series based on characters from Marvel Comics after the Marvel Cinematic Universe . In North America, it is the sixth most successful film series with grossing over 2.43 billion US dollars, and worldwide it even ranks fifth with total grossing over 6.03 billion US dollars.

Two of the films were able to make it into the top 100 financially successful films . So is Dead Pool 2 number 97 (as of: August 8, 2020) and Deadpool at number 98 (as of: August 8, 2020).

The film critic Roger Ebert gave the films mostly positive reviews, but criticized that overall too many mutants would appear in the films. The mutants' abilities are varied, but poorly coordinated. This would make it difficult to achieve a balanced representation of the various skills within a film.

The first two X-Men films received praise for their cerebral tone. Especially in X-Men 2 , director Bryan Singer succeeds in giving each character a character-defining moment and manages to incorporate massive quotable scenes and staged a convincing finale towards the end. In 2006, the leading British film magazine Empire named X-Men 2 the best comic book adaptation of all time. When Singer left the series after the second part due to scheduling clashes in order to be able to shoot Superman Returns , many criticized his successor Brett Ratner. Colin Colvert of the daily Star Tribune said, for example, that Singer's sensitivity to discrimination against social outsiders made the first two X-Men films surprisingly resonant, even for non-comic fans. Singer juggles between several characters and has a special focus on a deliberate and coherent narrative flow, while the characters under Ratner are "flat" and the plot is "unimaginative" . Ranter deviates from the basic tone of the previous films and focuses too much on wanting to deliver a "spectacle" . The film critic James Berardinelli, however, thinks that X-Men: The Last Stand, while not as "tight" or "satisfactory" as X-Men 2 , is better "constructed" and "more accessible" than the first X-Men film from 2000. Singer's third X-Men production, X-Men: The Future Is Past , received critical acclaim. Alonso Duralde from TheWrap noted that Singer was the guarantee that the X-Men films could follow the current hype about comic book adaptations without having to direct the films according to the scheme .

IGN's Richard George praised the portrayals of Wolverine, Professor X, Magneto, Jean Gray, Storm, William Stryker, Mystique, Beast and Nightcrawler, but criticized the large cast and the resulting limited screen time for younger characters like Rogue, Iceman, Pyro and Kitty Pryde, who are " adjective-less teenagers " and was also disappointed with Cyclops' characterization. Sam Raimi said he was a fan of the series and especially highlighted the Singer films.

Effects on comic genre

Critics see the success of the first X-Men film as a modernization of the comic book genre. Richard George of IGN thinks that X-Men paved the way for comic book adaptations such as Spider-Man , Fantastic Four , V for Vendetta and Superman Returns, which appeared in the following years . Chris Hewitt of Empire Magazine sees X-Men as a catalyst for films based on characters from Marvel Comics: “Singer's 2000 film is the catalyst for everything that came after it, good or bad. Without him, the Marvel Studios would not exist today ”(“ Singer's 2000 movie is the catalyst for everything that's come since, good and bad. Without it, there's no Marvel Studios ”). Comic book writer Mark Millar stated that the first X-Men film " revolutionized " superhero cinema .

Continuity of the X-Men films

  • In the film X-Men it is mentioned that Wolverine's actual mutation is the enormous self-healing powers and that his claws were implanted afterwards. In X-Men Origins: Wolverine one follows the approach that he had bone claws before the adamantium procedure.
  • In X-Men Origins: Wolverine , Wolverine and Sabretooth have an emotional bond: they are brothers. In the first X-Men movie, Sabretooth reflects a completely different character, having different skills and a different relationship with Wolverine.
  • Wolverine learns in the film X-Men from Professor X that he and Magneto built the Cerebro, which is in the school. In X-Men: First Choice , Hank McCoy builds the Cerebro before he meets Magneto and Professor X.
  • In X-Men 2 , Dr. See Hank McCoy. Although the film is set many years after the events of X-Men: First Decision , in this version the young McCoy has not yet been turned into the beast by a failed self-experiment. In X-Men: Future is Past , however, this is explained with a temporarily mutation-suppressing serum developed by McCoy.
  • Professor X tells in the film X-Men that he and Magneto met when he was 17. At the first meeting of the two characters in X-Men: First decision , however, these are much older.
  • In X-Men: The Last Stand , a flashback shows how Professor X and Magneto went to see young Jean Gray. Professor X was not yet in a wheelchair at the time, although X-Men: First Decision , at the end of which Professor X is paralyzed, is located earlier. Furthermore, at the end of X-Men: First decision, the paths of Magneto and Professor X separate, so that they would hardly go to Jean Gray as mutual friends.
  • Likewise, Professor X can still walk at the end of X-Men Origins: Wolverine .
  • In the first three X-Men parts, Mystique has a distorted voice when seen in her true form. However, in X-Men: First Decision and the films that follow, she speaks in a normal, human voice.
  • Moira is in X-Men: First Decision, a woman around 30 years old. In the epilogue of X-Men: The Last Resistance , which takes place around 40-50 years later, Moira makes a brief appearance again, but is still a woman of around 30 to 40 years old.
  • Emma Frost is held captive in X-Men Origins: Wolverine by Col. William Stryker and is portrayed much younger than in X-Men: First Decision , although X-Men Origins: Wolverine was in 1979 at the time of the Three Mile Island reactor accident and thus 17 years later as X-Men: First decision plays. Their abilities are also represented significantly differently in X-Men Origins: Wolverine .
  • In X-Men: The Last Stand , Magneto loses his mutant powers. Shortly before the end you can still see how he manages to move a metal chess piece slightly. The return of his powers is shown in X-Men: Future is not past .
  • In X-Men: The Last Stand , Professor X is killed by Jean Gray. The post-credit scene then shows his twin brother waking up from a coma. In Wolverine: The Warrior's Way, the post-credit scene shows Wolverine being received by Professor X at the airport and commenting on it in amazement. In X-Men: The Future Is Past , the return of Professor X is not discussed further.
  • In Wolverine: Way of the Warrior , Wolverine's Adamantium claws are severed and his bony (see X-Men Origins: Wolverine ) grow back. In X-Men: Future is Past , which takes place after Wolverine: Way of the Warrior , he has his metal claws again.
  • The backstory of Deadpool in the film of the same name differs significantly from that in X-Men Origins: Wolverine . This error is addressed in the post-credit scene of Deadpool 2 , where Deadpool travels through time and kills his version from X-Men Origins: Wolverine in order to put the timelines back in order.

Other media

Books

In June 2000, Marvel Comics released a comic book prequel for the first film, X-Men: Beginnings , which explores the history of Magneto, Rogue and Wolverine. In 2003, Marvel released a comic book to mark the release of X-Men 2 in theaters . This is also a prequel. Nightcrawler's history and Wolverine's search for Alkali Lake are discussed in detail. The Del Rey Books publisher also published a novel version of each of the first three films . The last two were written by Chris Claremont .

Video games

In July 2000, the video game X-Men: Mutant Academy was released for PlayStation and Game Boy Color . It contains the costumes and a making-of from the first X-Men film. In April 2003, X2: Wolverine's Revenge was released for Nintendo GameCube , Game Boy Advance , Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 2 and Xbox . In the game, Patrick Stewart voiced the character Professor X. In May 2006, X-Men: The Official Game was finally released for the Nintendo GameCube, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS , PlayStation 2, Xbox and Xbox 360 consoles . The plot of the game is set between the first X-Men film and its sequel X-Men 2 . Among other things, Nightcrawler's will be missing in X-Men: The Last Stand . In May 2009, the video game X-Men Origins: Wolverine for the film of the same name was released. It was released for Microsoft Windows, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable , Wii and Xbox 360. In September 2011, X-Men: Destiny was released along with the home release of X-Men: First Decision on several consoles. The game contains the costumes of the film as unlockable content. All video games were distributed through Activision .

TV Shows

In October 2015, Marvel Television announced that two television series titled Legion and Hellfire were currently in development and based on the characters of the X-Men. FX Network ordered a pilot for Legion shortly thereafter and hired Noah Hawley to write the script. Dan Stevens was successfully cast as the main actor . The series is scheduled to air on FX Network in February 2017, and will also include eight episodes in one season worldwide in 125 countries that same month. The executive producers include Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Kinberg and Bryan Singer. Singer said the series should build on future X-Men films. Hellfire was originally to be developed by Fox Broadcasting Company and produced by 20th Century Fox Television and Marvel Television, and written by Evan Katz and Manny Coto . But when Katz and Coto left the project in January 2016 to concentrate more on work on 24: Legacy , development of the series was stopped in July 2016. Instead, it was announced on the same day that they wanted to develop an X-Men series that is about a couple of parents who are fleeing the government underground with their mutant children .

Home Publishing

20th Century Fox Home Entertainment released the first nine films on DVD , Blu-ray and as download . The first two films were also offered on VHS , while X-Men: First Choice , X-Men: Future Is Past and Deadpool came out in 4K . As the first film in the series, X-Men: Apocalypse was also released as Ultra HD Blu-ray at the same time as the DVD and Blu-ray launch. Several box sets were also released, such as the X-Men: The Cerebro Collection from 2014, which included all X-Men films.

By May 2014, the DVDs and Blu-rays for the first six films grossed around $ 620 million in the United States alone.
