Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is an animated film based on the Mass Effect series of computer games . It is a joint production of the companies BioWare , Funimation and TO Entertainment , the film was animated by Production IG . The film premiered on November 29, 2012 in Edmonton and a few select US cinemas and was released in December as a download on the Xbox Live and PlayStation Network games networks as well as on Blu-ray and DVD . A German version was published on April 26, 2013 by the company WVG Medien.

The film takes place shortly before or parallel to the events of the game "Mass Effect 2". The focus is on the marine James Vega, who also appears as a companion character in Mass Effect 3 . The film highlights an event from Vegas' past. As the leader of a special unit on a distant colony, he has to fend off the attacks of enemy invaders called The Collectors, who are threatening the inhabitants of the planet.
