Career
Kowalenko made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1963/64 . Already at the opening competition on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf he landed in third place on his first podium. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen he also showed a good performance with seventh place, before missing the top 10 for the first time in eleventh on Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck . After he only jumped to 17th place in Bischofshofen , he reached sixth place in the overall ranking.
At the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck in 1964 , he took 12th place from the normal hill after good jumps. From the large hill, he finished 20th.
Kowalenko also started successfully in his second Four Hills Tournament in 1964/65 . He was second again on the podium in Oberstdorf and also achieved the best individual placement of his career. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen, too, he was fourth in a very good top 10 place and only narrowly missed the podium. However, he unexpectedly broke off the tour and ended up only in 50th place overall. The following year he was on the tour.
At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1966 , Kowalenko managed 11th place from the large hill after jumps on 79 and 78 meters. From the normal hill he landed at 77 and 79.5 meters and thus reached 18th place.
At the Four Hills Tournament 1966/67 Kowalenko was able to jump to 11th place again in Innsbruck. In the overall standings he reached 15th place. After a year later at the Four Hills Tournament 1967/68 he achieved only mediocre results and only finished the tour as 36th, he ended his active ski jumping career. After his active career, Kovalenko studied sports in Leningrad.
