Axel Zitzmann (born February 21, 1959 in Graefenthal ) is a former German ski jumper .

He grew up in Lauscha and was discovered in the winter sports section of the then BSG Chemie Lauscha and delegated to the children's and youth sports school (KJS) in Zella-Mehlis as a junior team . As a result, he came to SC Motor Zella-Mehlis , where Reinhard Heß, also from Lauscha, became his trainer.

In his first international tournament on March 17, 1979 at the Ski Flying World Championships in Planica , he won the silver medal in individual jumping. Zitzmann was the first German to win an international medal under his then club coach and later national coach Reinhard Heß. At the GDR championships that took place in the same year, Zitzmann was able to achieve the bronze medal with third place.

In his first World Cup competition on December 30, 1980 in Oberstdorf , he reached 63rd place. In the following three competitions of the Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 he was able to achieve a 19th place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , an 11th in Innsbruck and a 72nd place in Bischofshofen . At the GDR championships in 1981 he was able to win the bronze medal. On March 21, 1981 he jumped his last World Cup competition in Planica and achieved a 3rd place.

In 1978 and 1979 Zitzmann was the winner of the friendship's tournament . In 1978 he also won the Bohemia Tour and the Swiss Ski Jump Tour .

Today Zitzmann works in the technical field and acts as race director for jumping in his home country.
