The fifth ski flying world championship was held from March 15 to 18, 1979 in Planica , Yugoslavia . This was already the second ski flying world championship in Planica. For this World Championships the hill was converted to a K-point of 185 m.

Klaus Ostwald jumped a new world record in training with 176.0 m.

Axel Zitzmann was still in the lead by 19 points after the first day of evaluation. Armin Kogler was able to overtake him on the second day of the competition with a jump of 169 m in the last jump.
