Yuri Vitalyevich Kalinin ( Russian Юрий Витальевич Калинин ; born January 20, 1953 in Sortavala ) is a former Soviet ski jumper .
Career
Kalinin made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1971/72 . Already at the opening competition on the Bergiselschanze in Innsbruck , he surprisingly landed fifth. After jumping to 16th place in the New Year's competition on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen , he narrowly missed the podium on the Schattenbergschanze in Oberstdorf and was fourth. After a 21st place in Bischofshofen , he finished fifth in the overall standings with 886.4 points.
At the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo , he started in singles from the normal hill and reached 20th place. At the 1972 Ski Flying World Championship in Planica , which was held for the first time in March , he came seventh.
At the Four Hills Tournament in December 1972/73 , he missed a repeat of the previous year. In the end, he only finished 33rd in the overall ranking and thus achieved the worst overall result of his career. During the tour, the second ski flying world championship in 1973 took place in Oberstdorf on the Heini-Klopfer ski flying hill . When Hans-Georg Aschenbach won , he came in sixth and was thus able to improve by one place over the previous year.
Kalinin started the Four Hills Tournament 1973/74 with a fifth place in Oberstdorf. In Garmisch-Partenkirchen he disappointed with 80th place before jumping to eighth place in Innsbruck. After ranking 37th in Bischofshofen on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze , he was able to achieve 22nd place in the overall ranking. For the Four Hills Tournament 1974/75 he was able to improve again significantly. Although he did not consistently jump to the top places in all competitions, the worst placement was only 19th in Innsbruck. He finished the tour in ninth place overall. In his last Four Hills Tournament in 1975/76 , however, it was again only 23rd overall.
At the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Kalinin was ranked 22nd on the normal hill and 24th on the large hill.
Three years after his last tour, Kalinin ended his active ski jumping career with the start of the ski flying world championship in 1979 in Planica . Like six years earlier, he was sixth again.
