The first training session for the 2002 Ski Flying World Championships on Teufelsberg had to be canceled due to gusty winds (up to 50 km / h) and heavy rain and postponed to Friday. The training had to be postponed several times on Friday. Veli-Matti Lindström from Finland showed the longest jump with 205 meters.
After the first round, the German Sven Hannawald was in the lead with a jump of 202 meters and 197.4 points. In second place was the Finn Matti Hautamäki, who reached 202.5 meters (193.0 points) ahead of his compatriot Veli-Matti Lindström (191 meters and 182.2 points). In the first round, two athletes jumped over the 200-meter mark.
In the second round, Hannawald was able to fly again to 202 meters and thus secure first place (396.3 points). His team-mate Martin Schmitt followed in second place with exactly the same distance with 368.3 points. The two Finns Matti Hautamäki (363.4 points) and Veli-Matti Lindström (362.8 points) followed in third and fourth, ahead of Simon Ammann (360.0 points) from Switzerland.
On Sunday night, a hurricane low with peaks of up to 20 meters per second hit the Czech Republic. On Sunday, the second day of the competition on the Teufelsberg was canceled due to snow flurries and strong gusts of wind of up to 70 km / h.
Since the 2002 World Cup, Sven Hannawald has been the first jumper to defend his title at a World Ski Flying Championship. The curious thing was that Hannawald had won the title in 2000 in Vikersund, Norway, after just one day of flying.
