Hansjörg Sumi (born January 19, 1959 in Saanen ) is a former Swiss ski jumper .

Career

Sumi, who started for the Gstaad ski club , took part in an international jumping competition for the first time with the 1976/77 Four Hills Tournament . However, he could not achieve success in the Four Hills Tournament either in 1976/77 or 1977/78. It was not until the Four Hills Tournament in 1978/79 that he was placed in the top ten in all four competitions and ended the tour as 2nd in the overall standings.

On December 27, 1979 Sumi started for the first time in Cortina d'Ampezzo in the newly created Ski Jumping World Cup . He narrowly missed the podium in his first competition and jumped to 4th place. In Innsbruck he was able to achieve a podium place in a World Cup competition for the first time with 2nd place.

At the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , Sumi took 9th place on the normal hill and 7th place on the large hill.

In the first World Cup competition after the Games, in St. Moritz , he again achieved fourth place, just behind the podium. On February 29, 1980 he won his first and only World Cup competition on his home hill in Gstaad . In Engelberg , too , he achieved another podium finish with third place. After he was fourth in the Swedish Falun , he finished the 1979/80 World Cup season in 8th place overall.

In the years that followed, Sumi could hardly achieve consistent performance. At the Four Hills Tournament 1980/81 he only jumped to the back of the table and was so unsuccessful and without points. In the first jump after the tour, which was also the last for Sumi of the season, he achieved two World Cup points in Ironwood with 14th place in ski flying on the Copper Peak hill , which in the end gave him one in the overall World Cup ranking 62nd place.

The world cup season 1981/82 began for Sumi with good results, but he was again unsuccessful in the Four Hills Tournament. On January 27, 1982 he was able to jump onto the podium again with third place in St. Moritz . At the Nordic World Ski Championships 1982 , which took place in Oslo shortly afterwards , Sumi reached 30th place on the normal hill and 49th place on the large hill.

In the following season 1982/83 he reached after a changing season in terms of results at the end with 46 World Cup points 22nd place in the overall World Cup ranking. In his last World Cup season 1983/84 he was able to achieve a second place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and jumped to fourth place in Cortina d'Ampezzo. The jumping in Cortina d'Ampezzo was also his last World Cup competition. In the overall ranking he reached 32nd place again with 32 points.

Sumi ended his active ski jumping career by participating in the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . He achieved 22nd place on the large hill and 32nd place on the normal hill.

Between 1979 and 1984 Sumi won five Swiss championship titles .
