Valery Savin ( Russian Валерий Савин ; born June 21, 1951 ) is a former Soviet ski jumper .

Career

Sawin made his international debut at the Four Hills Tournament in 1977/78 . After jumping only to a weak 37th place in the opening competition in Oberstdorf , he achieved a top 20 place for the first time with 19th place on the Great Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen . After a following 26th place in Innsbruck and 17th place on the Paul-Ausserleitner-Schanze in Bischofshofen , he finished the tour in 21st place overall, which was his best overall result.

At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1978 he reached seventh place on the normal hill. He repeated this success on the large hill and was also seventh. The Soviet Union did not set up a team in team jumping.

On his second Four Hills Tournament in 1978/79 , Sawin missed out on top of the world. Even though he achieved his best individual tour result with 16th place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, he only finished the tour in 35th place overall. After several years' break from touring, he made his debut in the ski jumping World Cup on December 30, 1983 as part of the Four Hills Tournament 1983/84 . The tour, whose jumping was his only World Cup participation, finished Sawin in 50th place overall.

He ended his career with the start at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo . He jumped from the normal hill to 31st place in the individual.
