action

Rose and Christopher DaSilva take care of their adopted baby daughter Sharon. She is a notorious sleepwalker . She also tends to utter the name of a town called "Silent Hill" over and over again while sleepwalking. Sharon also repeatedly paints strange pictures, which she regularly scribbled over with black paint shortly afterwards.

When Rose finds out that Silent Hill actually exists, she decides, against Christopher's will, to go to this city with Sharon, especially since neither medication nor therapies really help. Christopher tries to force Rose to turn back by blocking his credit card , but to no avail. Shortly before Silent Hill, Rose is stopped by the police officer Cybil Bennett, who mistakenly believes Rose kidnapped Sharon. However, since Rose sees a sign to Silent Hill right in front of her, she ignores the policewoman and drives away. There is a chase that ends suddenly when Rose has to evade her vehicle, as a figure appears in the middle of the road that resembles her daughter Sharon. The vehicle skids and hits a guardrail; Rose passes out. When she wakes up, she is in Silent Hill and Sharon is gone.

In Silent Hill it is raining ash, there is thick fog and the streets are deserted. A ravine gapes around the city. Occasionally alarm sirens sound and night falls unnaturally quickly. Again and again Rose sees a childlike figure in which she thinks she recognizes her daughter who is running away from her, and follows her. Together with the police officer Cybil, she explores the city, which is covered with ash during the day and is haunted by monsters at night .

In the meantime, Christopher also drives to Silent Hill, where he meets Officer Thomas Gucci at a roadblock. You search the city, which appears without ash rain and fog, but meet no one. However, Christopher thinks he can feel his wife's presence. He steals police files that night and finds a photo of Alessa Gillespie, who looks like Sharon. He presses the nun of an orphanage from which the DaSilvas adopted Sharon in order to get answers to his questions about the origin of his daughter. Officer Gucci arrests Christopher and makes him return home.

When it gets dark again, Rose and Cybil flee to the local church, which is used as a shelter by a group of people. The leader Christabella first leads them into the building in which a demon is supposed to live, but then accuses them of being witches when Christabella sees the photo of Sharon and the similarity to Alessa in Rose's amulet. Cybil allows Rose to escape, but is knocked down by Christabella's henchmen. Rose eventually ends up in the Chamber of Evil. There she is informed about the past of Silent Hill. The city was destroyed in a devastating fire thirty years ago. At that time a fanatical sect ruled the city, burning women and girls whom the sect leader Christabella had identified as alleged witches. One of their victims was little Alessa. Alessa could be saved, but she was terribly disfigured. In the hospital, Alessa's pain and thoughts of revenge manifested in the form of a demonic doppelganger. This created a "parallel world" for them, in which the sect is now trapped. The remaining good in Alessa, in turn, manifested itself in an infant that was placed in front of the orphanage and later taken in by the DaSilvas.

The demon wants revenge on Christabella, but cannot enter the church alone. He persuades Rose to take him to Christabella and nests in Rose's body. Rose now goes to church, where the showdown takes place. Rose sees that Christabella burned the cop Cybil alive. She also wants Sharon, who was hidden by Alessa's mother Dahlia, but was found by the sect, to be executed in the same way. Rose confronts Christabella and is stabbed by her, but healed by the demon. Her blood opens a portal from which Alessa appears, who slaughters all the people in the church with barbed wire , she takes revenge on Christabella particularly cruelly. Rose, Sharon and Dahlia are spared.

Rose can finally hug Sharon and leave Silent Hill. When they get home, this, as well as the entire way home, is shrouded in fog, as it existed in Silent Hill. Fading shows that Christopher is also in the house, but cannot see them and vice versa. He only seems to notice their presence briefly (as in Silent Hill before).

At this point it becomes apparent that Rose and Sharon have never left the parallel world in which they encountered the sect, and neither is their vehicle visible in the real world. And while both of them look around the house, Christopher closes the front door, which he has opened by magic.

background

The film was shot in Canada in the places Brampton , Brantford , Burford Township , Hamilton , St. Thomas and Toronto in the state of Ontario and in St. George in the state of New Brunswick . Production of the film began in December 2004. Shooting took place between April 27, 2005 and July 22, 2005. 165 film sets and locations were used for the shooting . Silent Hill is a co-production by TriStar Pictures , Davis-Films , Konami Corporation Ltd. and Metalworks Studios . It was published in Germany by Concorde Filmverleih . The film premiered on April 21, 2006 in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom . It was first seen in Germany on May 11, 2006.

The budget of the film is 50 million dollars estimated. The opening weekend in the United States raised over $ 20.1 million, with total revenue in the United States totaling nearly $ 47 million. Worldwide revenues of over $ 97.6 million were recorded. At the German box office, almost 417,000 viewers were counted by the end of 2006.

The producers and the director have confirmed in interviews that this is a film for "real" Silent Hill fans and that they do not want to be disappointed. Therefore, the tracking shots and optical design effects, such as rusty and bloody walls, as well as the parallel world were completely taken over from the games in order to create a real Silent Hill reality. The famous nurse from the first part was also thought of. Lisa Garland is played by one of the dancers who also plays one of the Bubble Head Nurses. The director emphasized in an interview that he would have liked to expand her role. However, this was not possible because the film would have been too long. In addition, many creatures known mainly from Silent Hill 2 are also present in the film, such as Lying Figure, Creepers, Bubble Head Nurse, Pyramid Head and others.

There are ghost towns uninhabitable due to coal fires in reality too, for example Centralia in Pennsylvania , which served as the template for Silent Hill .

It took Christophe Gans five years to obtain the rights to film the video game. He only succeeded in doing so after sending Konami an interview explaining how much the video game meant to him and at the same time enclosing a video produced from his own budget with the original music of the video game. Originally the script contained only female characters, which is why Christophe Gans got it back and added the role of Christopher DaSilva. Cameron Diaz was originally intended to cast the role of Cybil Bennett .

Rose's outfit was made in around 100 variations, starting with soft summer tones that became noticeably grayer and bloodier as the film progressed. Many of the creatures were played by dancers - including Roberto Campanella - so that they could make abrupt and twisted movements.

Differences from the game

The film essentially sticks to the events of the first game, but there are essential differences:

  • The character Harry Mason leads through the game , while in the film the main character is named Rose DaSilva .
  • The daughter's name is Cheryl in the game and Sharon in the movie .
  • The character Christabella does not appear in the game, while Michael Kaufmann does not appear in the film. The role of the nurse Lisa is only shown briefly in the film and is not mentioned by name. Officer Thomas Gucci is only mentioned in a newspaper article in the game regarding an investigation into drug trafficking in Silent Hill, while in the film he leads the search for Rose and Sharon and thus takes on a more important role.
  • The character of Dahlia Gillespie was completely rewritten for the film.
  • The “pyramid head” only appears in the second part of the series of games.
  • The background story about "the evil" and the ending differ significantly from the game.
  • In the game, the impression arises again and again that the main character only imagines everything by suddenly waking up in other places and communicating with people there. Statements like “Was I dreaming” or “Was that another dream” can be heard several times. In the film, the characters are constantly in town.
  • Some locations in the game, such as Lakeside Amusement Park, are not featured in the film. Annie's Bar, which plays a major role in the game, is shown in a short scene in the film.
  • Elementary objects of the games, such as the radio announcing the opponents, are only briefly indicated in the film by the noise of the protagonist's cell phone and the policewoman's radio. The use of a flashlight is largely taken up in the film.
  • The character Cybil Bennett dies in the film. There is an opportunity to save them in the game.

Soundtrack

Akira Yamaoka , who created the sound of the Silent Hill Games and, as the composer, composed and recorded all of the music himself, played a key role in the film music and all the sound effects . The aim is to convey the Silent Hill universe to the fans as authentically and close to the games as possible . With the exception of the music track Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash , all music tracks are taken from the video games.

Reviews

The film tended to be received negatively by critics. On Rotten Tomatoes , out of a total of 99 reviews, only 30% were positive. Metacritic scored 31 out of 100 based on 21 reviews. On IMDb , however, the film has an above-average rating of 6.6 / 10 stars (as of October 2016).

The Hollywood Reporter read of an "overcooked nightmare". The film was praised from various quarters for its look and atmosphere. For example, Cinema wrote that the film was a "bloodthirsty yet strangely poetic odyssey through hell".

On May 13, 2006, the Oberösterreichische Nachrichten read: “Enjoy the harmonious furnishings, the surrealistic visual art, the horror scenario, the strong music. But don't try to understand. "The lexicon of international films judged:" The extraordinarily ambitious, radical adaptation of a computer game. The brilliantly designed film evokes philosophical aspects, grotesque-looking imagery and the renunciation of conventional narrative structures less horror than a feeling of paralyzing helplessness. "For the film starts , Carsten Baumgardt wrote that the horror mystery thriller was" a highly interesting concentration of ideas, which at times resulted in stylish boredom dies [...] the individual elements are partly wonderful, selected scenes are staged powerfully and imaginatively [...] Gans is undoubtedly an innovative, capable director, but the Frenchman still didn't succeed with Silent Hill. "

Nominations and Awards

In 2006 the film received a Teen Choice Award nomination in the Movies - Choice Thriller category. Radha Mitchell was nominated for the 2006 International Award for Best Actress.

In 2007 Jane Tattersall , David McCallum , Kathy Choi , Roderick Deogrades , Mark Shnuriwsky , Kevin Banks , Jill Purdy and Mishann Lau were nominated for the DGC Craft Award in the category "Sound Editing - Feature Film".

continuation

The planned start of the shooting of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D under the direction of Michael J. Bassett was March 9, 2011. This and that all important roles were occupied, the filmmaker announced on his official blog. The Australian actress Adelaide Clemens played the main role of Heather Mason . The protagonists from Silent Hill (Radha Mitchell, Sean Bean and Deborah Kara Unger) as well as Carrie-Anne Moss , Malcolm McDowell and Kit Harington acted in the other roles .

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D was filmed entirely in 3D, as Bassett explained at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2012. The film opened in German cinemas on November 29, 2012.
