history

In 1783 the settler Peter Clinch settled in the area with other immigrants and founded St. Georg on February 2, 1874. The name probably goes back to St. George . The timber industry , shipbuilding and the extraction of building materials from the nearby granite rocks were the main livelihoods of the inhabitants. In the mid-1800s there were five shipyards , ten sawmills, and seven stone mills in quarries . On October 17, 1904, the place received city rights. Building materials were still very much in demand and the place added The Granite Town . During the global economic crisis , many smaller companies ceased operations and the economic priorities had to be realigned. Today the place is active as a supplier in the container business, also in the salmon farming and the harvest of wild blueberries . A Wild Blueberry Festival is held every year .

Some historic buildings and places have been added to the List of historic places in Charlotte County, New Brunswick .
