scenario

The Dead Space series was created in the early 26th century and began in 2508. The raw materials of the earth and the solar system have been used up. Mankind finds the solution to its problems in building large mining ships. The best known and largest is the USG Ishimura, which is the main location of the first game and is already 60 years old at this point.

The series makes use of classic science fiction elements such as artificial gravity and superlight drives . The background is the idea of a used-up future, which is particularly intensified by the fact that the story takes place on mining ships and mining colonies. At the center of the series is an alien invasion, which is driven by artifacts (the so-called markers).

society

Civilization in its socio-cultural dimensions has so far only been marginally illuminated in Dead Space .

Unitology

A large part of the population consists of followers of the Unitology religion, which was involuntarily founded by Michael Altman in 2215. A meteorite impact had been recorded on the Yucatán peninsula in the Caribbean Sea seven years earlier . This meteorite turned out to be an artifact (the "black marker"), which is considered extraterrestrial . The artifact manipulated everyone with whom it came in contact, with the exception of the scientist Michael Altman, who was opposed to this artifact. However, Craig Markoff, who was also manipulated by the artifact, portrayed Altman as a prophet for Unitology against his will. Unitology was initially seen as a scientific ideology, but after Michael Altman succumbed to the manipulation by the marker, it changed to a religious community with a strict doctrine. After Altman's death on March 15, 2215 by a brute created by Craig Markoff, Unitology began to grow rapidly and within a very short time had over a million members.

government

As in most space science fiction publications, the earth is under the control of a central government. Although some larger colonies are partially self-sufficient , they are under the control of that central government and can be viewed as heteronomous .

Realizations for other media

comics

Electronic Arts and Image Comics announced a comic book series based on the game on February 21, 2008. Six volumes have been published, illustrated by Ben Templesmith and written by Antony Johnston. The prehistory of the game tells the events on Aegis VII, the planet that is worked by the Ishimura. The miners unearth an ancient artifact called "The Marker" that soon begins to affect everyone in the colony. The first volume (Issue # 1) was published on March 3, 2008.

Movies

The game is accompanied by a 74-minute animated film Dead Space: Downfall , which is a mixture of cartoon and computer animation and was created in the animation studio Film Roman . The film was initially only included in the limited edition , but was later also available separately. The film is timed between the comics that were released prior to the game's release and the main game. It is told how the virus gets on the Ishimura and how the Necromorphs take over the Ishimura.

The film was developed by Film Roman and released on October 28, 2008.

Also for Dead Space 2 was developed by Film Roman , a full-length feature film produced. It is titled Dead Space: Aftermath and has been available in German stores on Blu-Ray and DVD since January 27, 2011. In terms of content, the film revolves around some of the crew members of the research vessel USG O'Bannon who are brought to an unknown warship for interrogation purposes. The O'Bannon had the task of investigating the incidents on the planet Aegis VII more closely, whereby the ship was overrun by Necromorphs just like the Ishimura before. The name of the research ship is based on the well-known screenwriter Dan O'Bannon .

Furthermore, EA got in touch with various production companies to talk about a Dead Space movie, which will soon be staged by director DJ Caruso .
