John Shirley

John Patrick Shirley (* 10. February 1953 in Houston , Texas ) is an American science fiction - Author , punk musician and lyricist and screenwriter. He has lived in San Francisco for many years .

Career

Shirley is one of the earliest writers of cyberpunk . He was best known for the A Song Called Youth trilogy (published in German as Eclipse ). The novels are set in a dystopian Europe and subplots in North America as well. After the outbreak of war between the Western and Eastern blocs, large parts of Europe lay in ruins. The NATO has awarded the military control of the territory to a private organization; this organization is controlled by fascist fundamentalist Christians who want to implement their political vision in Europe. The main characters of the trilogy are adventurers who join forces with other forces such as the Mossad to form a small underground force to offer resistance. In 1999/2000 the books of the A Song Called Youth trilogy were re-published in a revised version.

Unlike other writers in the genre like Bruce Sterling or Neal Stephenson , Shirley is a much more conventional writer. He is not particularly interested in high-tech experiments, nor does he try to find new ethical principles that enable human coexistence in the ultra-modern hypercomplexity. Shirley's stories are written in the classic logic of below versus above, the struggle of the individual against the organization . The novels gain a special flair because Shirley is an active member of the punk scene and can empathize with the group experience of small, marginalized, resistant groups.

As a screenwriter he wrote the script for the film The Crow (1994) with David J. Schow .

criticism

  • Detlef Hedderich on the Eclipse trilogy: "The implications of the subject: National Socialism in alliance with the Christian fundamentalists, is certainly not a fundamentally wrong, albeit quite radical, idea. Shirley has all of this with his fluent writing and his close-up descriptions dressed in tension-laden garb, so that even those readers who have long since been believed to be weary of these problematic contexts already presented in so-called 'serious' literature get their money's worth. "
