Batman of the Future (Original title: Batman Beyond ) is an American animated series from 1999 to 2001. It is set in the middle of the 21st century. Bruce Wayne / Batman has gotten too old and can no longer pursue his nightly crime fight. In his place is the young Terry McGinnis , who now protects Gotham City under the guidance of Bruce Wayne . In 52 episodes of this series to 20 minutes each and subsequently epilogue of the series Justice League are from the Warner Bros. Television adventures of this new Batman presents. Batman of the Future is a sequel to the Batman cartoon series .

Set in the near future, the young Terry McGinnis has followed in the footsteps of the now aged Bruce Wayne to take revenge on his father's murderers and to take on Wayne's legacy in a bat costume.

The episode "Epilog" of the series The Justice League is actually a Batman-of-the-Future episode, which shows the official beginning and end of the series. As Bruce got older, when he was still active as Batman, Amanda Waller (a former opponent on The Justice League ) decided to create a Batman for the future in order to preserve his legacy and symbolism. She got the DNA from the original and cloned it in her laboratory. When Warren McGinnis received what appeared to be a flu shot , Bruce's DNA entered his body and replaced his genetic makeup, and after a while, his son Terry was born. Waller wanted to fully replicate the making of Batman and have Terry's parents killed in an assassination attempt. The assassin was Bruce Wayne's old love, Andrea Beaumont, the Phantom. But Andrea knew how Bruce was after the murder of his parents and refused to carry out the act, a decision that Waller had to accept for the sake of Batman's inheritance.

Terry, along with some of his friends, was attacked by the Jokerz (one of several vandalizing youth gangs who based their actions on those of the Joker ) when he was around 16 years old . Terry escaped and inadvertently got into Wayne Manor. The Joker gang followed, and they met old Bruce Wayne, the real Batman. After a fight against the Jokerz, Bruce had a minor heart attack and was brought to his house by Terry. When Terry found a bat in the wall clock at the entrance to the Bath Cave, he inadvertently found out who the old man was. He was thrown out and drove home, but there he learned that his father had been murdered. The mastermind behind the act was Derek Powers, Bruce's former business partner, who was involved in a crooked deal and had Terry's father killed because he had evidence against him and wanted to report him. Terry decided to steal old Batman's costume to get revenge on the killers. Bruce initially opposed the boy's training, but after he gained his trust, Terry began training to become the new Batman.

It wasn't until many years later that Terry found out by chance that Bruce was really his father. In his awakened anger, Terry decides to hand over the Batman's costume and visits Amanda Waller, who is also gray, where he receives more information about himself and Bruce. At first he was convinced that he was just Bruce's clone and was created at his behest, but when Amanda tells an adventure of the real Batman and explains her reasons for creating the new Batman, he is refuted and he finally accepts Bruce as his Father and his responsibilities as the new Batman.

The most striking change in the appearance of the new Batman is probably the lack of the familiar cape. The new suit (which is more of an armor than a costume) features folding wings under the arms, jet boots that make it possible to fly, and several futuristic versions of the famous Bat gadgets. In order to be able to move in the vertically moving traffic of the 21st century , Batman has a new kind of flying Batmobile. The still inexperienced Terry receives information over the radio from his mentor Bruce Wayne, for whom he officially takes the position of personal assistant to cover his nightly activities.

Batman's ally is the former woman behind the mask of Batgirl and current Police Commissioner Barbara Gordon , who, despite reservations about Bruce Wayne, helps him again and again. The rogue world has also developed conditionally. Although Batman has to deal with new adversaries like Inque , he also encounters more or less modified versions of the old adversaries (e.g. the "Joker Gang").

  • Terry McGinnis / Batman : As Batman's genetic son, Terry inherited his dexterity, reflexes and perseverance. He was on the other side of the law as a boy, and his role as Batman gives him new self-esteem and a chance to repent for his difficult years.
  • Bruce Wayne : Bruce had retired as Batman twenty years before the series began, when his old age and instinctive use of a gun to save his life had troubled him on his last fall. After Terry assumed the identity of Batman, Wayne officially hires him as his chauffeur and delivery boy and trains him as his successor, whom he supports with advice and background knowledge from the Batcave.
  • Dana Tann : Terry's girlfriend. Although she initially knew nothing of Terry's double life for a long time, as an adult she eventually learns the truth. Often their relationship is in danger because Terry has little time for them thanks to his new calling.
  • Maxine "Max" Gibson : An African American classmate of Terry and Dana. Very intelligent and adventurous, but with significant family problems. Through her own research and an unpleasant encounter with a delinquent from her school, she finds out Terry's secret identity and from then on supports him - whether he and Bruce want it or not - in his adventures.
  • Commissioner Barbara Gordon / Batgirl : After Barbara retired from the superhero life as Batgirl , she succeeded her father in the police force and married the prosecutor Samuel Young. Although she does not approve of Terry's double life out of bitter experience, she supports him wherever she can in her official role.
  • Ace : A Danish mastiff and former fighting dog in illegal animal fights found and recorded by Wayne. Although initially suspicious of Terry, the two eventually become friends.
  • Mary McGinnis : Terry's mother is a scientist at Astro-Tech. She was divorced from him before her husband's death, and Terry moves back in with her after his husband's death.
  • Matt McGinnis : Terry's eight-year-old younger brother never misses an opportunity to tease his brother over and over, even though they are actually very fond of each other. Ironically, Matt is a huge fan of the new Batman, not realizing that he even lives with it.
  • Melanie Walker : Was the youngest member of the Royal Flush Gang and embodied the ten there. She falls in love with Terry, who reciprocates these feelings. This causes Melanie to distance herself from her criminal family. But she is always drawn into their machinations.

In addition to guest appearances by some of Bruce Wayne's old opponents - Mister Freeze , Bane and Ra's al Ghul - the series features a whole range of new enemies and their successors:

  • Derek Powers / Blight : Derek Powers was the former business partner, later the sole head of Wayne Industries, which now operates under the name Wayne-Powers after a merger . However, Powers got caught up in illegal machinations. After he was exposed to a biological weapon developed by him, a radioactive radiation treatment caused his transformation into the super villain Blight (English for 'destruction', ' blight ' or 'eyesore'). His son Paxton Powers later takes over the management of the company.
  • Inque : A freelance saboteur who was treated with a special mutagen and turned into a being made of living ink. She has a daughter named Diana Clay .
  • Walter Shreeve / Shriek : Walter Shreeve was an engineer at Wayne-Powers in the field of acoustics. He owes his villain name Shriek (English for 'screeching') to a special suit with which he can carry out sonic attacks. Ever since Batman accidentally overloaded his suit and made him numb, Shriek has viewed him as his personal mortal enemy.
  • Ira Billings / Spellbinder : Ira Billings was a former youth psychologist at Terry's school. Spellbinder uses hypnosis and virtual reality technology , in addition to his knowledge of the human psyche, to control his victims.
  • Cobra : A criminal organization made up of snake cultists who seek world domination.
  • Jokerz : The collective name for a number of different youth gangs who, following the example of the Joker, spread chaos and not very witty "jokes" in Gotham City.
  • Royal Flush Gang : A criminal “family business” whose names are based on the cards in a Royal Flush .
  • Mad Stan : A bombastic anarchist who seeks to destroy what he believes is a decadent and corrupt modern society.
  • Stalker : A big game hunter who has been given a cybernetic spine after a failed attempt to hunt down a wild black panther . Since this implant made him superior to any normal prey, he now tries far more difficult targets - like the new Batman.
  • Dr. Able Cuvier : A criminal geneticist who invented a technique for mixing human and animal DNA called "splicing". Although Cuvier only appears in one episode, splicing appears again and again as an illegal subculture throughout the series.
  • Charlie Bigelow / Big Time : A former friend of Terry who is responsible for Terry's time in juvenile prison and his involuntary reflection. A mutagen turns Charlie into a monster and tries to bring Terry back into the world of crime as his henchman.

The first episodes of the series were also released as a film, which is considered the series' pilot film. The plot is the same in content as the first two episodes of the series.

Batman of the Future is an animated film produced directly for the video and DVD market from 2000 and is based on the cartoon series Batman of the Future .

After a miniseries based on the television series, "Batman Beyond" also got its own comic series at DC Comics , which was aimed at young readers. In 2000, Dino Verlag only published the first edition in German, which appeared in three different cover versions.
