Bruce Walter Timm (born February 8, 1961 ) is an American director, producer and screenwriter who is particularly well known in the United States , especially for his work on popular cartoons such as Batman and The Justice League .

Life

Even as a teenager, Bruce Timm had great drawing talent, which according to his teachers and parents was considered “unique”. In contrast to many other well-known draftsmen, Timm taught himself everything, he hadn't attended a single drawing course in his entire life.

As a kid, Timm was always a huge fan of comics like Spider-Man , Flash Gordon, and Justice League . Later on he really wanted to become a comic artist, like his great role models Jack Kirby , Harvey Kurtzman , Jim Steranko , John Buscema or Wally Wood .

Timms style was inspired primarily because of his great love for older comics at the very design of the 50s and 60s comics, as well as the special Art Deco - style and the architecture of the 1920s. Like his colleague Genndy Tartakovsky, he is considered a great minimalist (he dispenses with many details in his drawings and in his figures, many of his figures appear angular).

Timm worked for some time as a comic book artist for Marvel Comics and DC Comics , where he was granted a greater success in this area. According to his superiors at the time, he was “talented but lacking in ambition”. Although Timm actually wanted to be a comic artist, he later worked as a designer for cartoon series such as Blackstar , Flash Gordon , He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and later on the very well-known and popular Tiny Toon adventure from Warner Bros. Later, Timm took over the entire thing Design of the animated series Batman: The Animated Series , where he had designed all characters except for Mr. Freeze (who was drawn by Mike Mignola ), Man Bat and the Mad Hatter (both of which were designed by Kevin Nowlan ).

At first, the series was heavily criticized for being more brutal than other, previous animated series about superheroes (such as The Amazing Spider-Man ). Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, the producer of the series, fought several times with the American authorities for censorship . According to Timm: "We paid attention to the look, we don't want to destroy the children of America, we just wanted to make a good series."

But even the series' biggest opponents could not prevent it from being broadcast on independent television channels. The series was a huge success, especially in America. Due to the high ratings and the good income, the studio decided that Timm should create another series: Superman: The Animated Series and later also the popular series Batman of the Future , which takes place about 40 years after Batman: The Animated Series . Timm said that Batman of the Future was one of his most challenging series to date. As with previous series, Timm wanted elements of the '60s in the science fiction - series involve. He and his other draftsmen had to deal intensively with the future design of the 1960s for several weeks, and then redesign it so that it should look really modern and innovative. In fact, the new Batman was different from the previous versions. He was younger (here a teenager instead of a man in his late 30s) and he had state-of-the-art technology (like full-body armor or working wings, things that were left out in the earlier Batman). Like most of Timm's previous series, Batman of the Future became a huge hit.

Two years later, in 2001, Bruce Timm started a new project. The globally popular superheroes of the Justice League should all fight evil together in a new series. In this new series, Timm wanted to do without the design of the 60s for the first time and this time, he relied to a large extent on the design of the late 80s and early 90s, whereby he also made vehicles more modern. To this day, the Justice League series, known in German-speaking countries primarily as The Justice League , is one of the most popular cartoon series ever.

Bruce Timm recently announced that his next project will be the production of an animated cartoon called Batman: Gotham Knight (which is scheduled between the Batman Begins and The Dark Knight films ).
