Wonder Woman is a 2009 American cartoon based on the DC Comics comic series of the same name . Directed by Lauren Montgomery .

action

In ancient Greece , a battle between the Amazons for Hippolyte on the one hand and the god of war Ares on the other has unleashed. During the battle, Hippolyte kills her own son Thrax, whom Ares fathered with her, and then defeats Ares himself. Zeus, however, prevents her from killing Ares. Instead, the god of war is enslaved by bracelets and has to spend his life as a prisoner on the island of Themyscira, which is given to the Amazons by their goddess Hera . Hidden from the outside world, the Amazons can develop freely and lead a free life without men. The gods give Hippolyte a daughter, Diana, who grows up on Themyscira and matures into a powerful warrior.

In more modern times, a US pilot named Steve Trevor is shot down over the island and can make an emergency landing on Themyscira. The Amazons decide to bring him back. A competition should decide which Amazon can accompany it. Diana is excluded from the competition and is assigned to guard Ares, but Alexa takes over her position. Diana wins the competition and is chosen as the ambassador of the Amazons. In the meantime, however , Persephone kills Alexa and frees Ares, who escapes with her to the outside world. Diana has two assignments: to bring Steve Trevor back to America and to track down Ares. She is given a new outfit that reflects the national colors of the United States and flies to New York City on an invisible jet .

After some fighting, she is able to track down Ares in Greece, where he tries to get to Hades , who has the power to loosen his bonds. Diana is seriously injured in the confrontation, so Steve has to rescue her. However, Ares escapes and can persuade Hades to loosen his bonds. When the unconscious Diana wakes up in the hospital, it is too late: Ares begins subjugating the world and attacks Washington, DC . When Diana tries to stop him, the remaining Amazons attack. A bitter battle begins, which Diana ultimately wins. This time, Zeus doesn't spare Ares, and Diana can kill him.

Diana is named the Official Ambassador of the Amazons and now spends her time with Steve in New York City. There she now fights against super villains.

production

The film is one of a series of animated films that emerged from a cooperation between DC Comics and Warner and are tailored to a young target group. This also includes some harder scenes, in this case for example the battle scenes and the beheading of Ares, which are based on a US age rating PG-13 (approved for ages 13 and up with parental guidance).

The direct-to-DVD production was released on March 3, 2009 in the United States as Blu-Ray and DVD in multiple versions and had sales of $ 2,743,287 in the first two weeks. Overall, the DVD sold 470,384 copies in the USA and generated total sales of over 7 million US dollars. A German version was released on May 15, 2009. Two weeks later a double DVD version was released.

Wonder Woman is based on the official genesis of the comic figure, but has been modernized in some places.

criticism

"An animated film based on a comic book, which tells the plot, which is underpinned with elements from Greek mythology, in a very relational manner and entertains comparatively complex."
