Bignona is a city in southern Senegal . It is prefecture of the Bignona department in the Ziguinchor region .
Geographical location
Bignona is located in the west of the Casamance , 25 kilometers north of the regional prefecture of Ziguinchor and is separated from it by the Forêt de Bignona, the Forêt de Tobor, and the Casamance River , which is 650 meters wide . The Marigot de Bignona branches off from this as a tributary and as a tributary exposed to the tidal currents, meandering strongly , and passes to the west and north of the city. Gambia in the north is 39 km away and Guinea-Bissau in the south is 40 km away. The city is 58 km inland from the Atlantic near Diouloulou .
history
Before Ziguinchor, Bignona was the colonial administrative seat in the Casamance.
Due to the violent Casamance conflict between the Mouvement des forces démocratiques de la Casamance (MFDC) and the Senegalese government, development in the region was slow from 1985 to 2000 and was mainly due to the commitment of American aid organizations such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) dependent. However, there has been an official peace treaty between the MFDC and the government since December 2004 and the MFDC members are being reintegrated into society.
population
The last censuses showed the following population figures for the city:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1988 | 22,237 |
2002 | 25,477 |
2013 | 27,826 |
The people in the Bignona area are mainly active in agriculture, the service industry or tourism. The language border between Wolof and Diola runs between Bignona and Ziguinchor .
Partnerships
Since 2001 there has been a multiple award-winning (including a UNESCO World Decade Project) school partnership between a German school from Strausberg in Brandenburg and a school in Bignona. As a result, more and more German organizations such as the German Development Service (DED), the German Society for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Evangelical Development Service (EED) are getting involved in the region.
