Ibrahima Sonko (born January 22, 1981 in Bignona , Senegal ) is a Senegalese football player . His cousin Bacary Sagna also plays for Manchester City in the Premier League.

Club career

Sonko began his career with the French club AS Saint-Étienne , in 1999 he moved to the then third division Grenoble Foot 38 . In 2001 he was promoted to Ligue 2 and a year later he left France and moved to English club Brentford . In 2004 he joined the English second division FC Reading on a free transfer . He was soon nicknamed Superman by the fans of Reading FC because of his above-average bounce, with which he headed the balls away.

In 2006 he rose with the club in the Premier League . His first season in the Premier League was eventful. On matchday two he saw the red card after an emergency brake in the penalty area against Luke Moore in the game against Aston Villa after 33 minutes, Reading lost the game 2-1. In October 2006 he clashed in stoppage time with Carlo Cudicini , the goalkeeper of Chelsea FC , in the air. Cudicini was then unconscious on the floor and had to be replaced. Sonko later announced that he had received multiple death threats over the incident.

On December 11, 2006, Sonko extended his contract with Reading until the summer of 2010. A month later, Sonko suffered a serious knee injury in the home game against Sheffield United , which meant the end of the season for the defender. It was not until October 20, 2007 that he made his comeback in the league game against Blackburn Rovers .

On August 26, 2011, he moved to Ipswich Town and signed a one-year contract.

For the 2012/13 season he moved to the Turkish Süper Lig for Akhisar Belediyespor .

National team career

Sonko was born in Senegal, but his family moved to France just six months after he was born. He initially decided to play for his home country and represented his country in the U23 national team. In 2006 he was nominated for the African Cup of Nations , but Sonko declined to participate in order to be available to Reading FC in the promotion battle in the Football League Championship . In December 2006, Sonko announced that he was awaiting a nomination for France's national team but would also play for Senegal if they consider him first.

Sonko was appointed to Senegal's 38-player squad for the 2008 African Cup of Nations in December 2007 and made it into the final squad of national coach Henryk Kasperczak as the only player without an international match . He made his international debut on January 12, 2008 in a preparation game against Namibia. In the 3-1 victory, he was in central defense for the full playing time. In January 2015, he terminated his contract early and left this club.
