Hendrik Christian Sartov (born March 14, 1885 in Kvistrup near Hadersleben , Denmark ; † March 21, 1970 in Glendale , California , USA ) was a Danish photographer and an outstanding cameraman with a short career in American silent film.

Life

Sartov, who comes from Northern Schleswig , today's Southern Jutland, lived in Kolding and worked as a photographer before he emigrated to America . On June 12, 1907, he came to the United States with the intention of settling in Maddock , North Dakota .

In Los Angeles, the silent film star Lillian Gish became aware of the portrait photographer and persuaded him to switch to film as a cameraman in 1917. Gish recommended him to her longtime in-house director David Wark Griffith , who had him photograph scenes of his anti-German, propagandistic war drama Hearts of the World as an unnamed cameraman that fall . Enthusiastic about Sartov's performance, the Dane became one of Griffith's regular cameramen over the next seven years. In 1924 he followed Griffith to Berlin for filming . The result was the drama that took place during the period of severe political unrest, economic turmoil and social upheaval in the years of inflation. Isn't life wonderful? , which tried to draw a less distorted and more realistic view of post-war Germany. Sartov stayed in Germany until September 18, 1924, when he returned to New Rochelle in the USA with his American wife Louise and ended his collaboration with Griffith.

Lillian Gish then secured Sartov's collaboration in 1926 on her two following ambitious works without Griffith: The Song of Songs and The Red Letter . Sartov's perfectly lit close-ups of the former Griffith star's face are among the most impressive things camera work was able to achieve in those years. Almost at the same time, on May 21, 1926, the Dane and American by choice was naturalized.

With the advent of talkies, Hendrik Sartov lost interest in cinema and returned to work as a photographer.
