Far to the East is an American drama film directed by David Wark Griffith from 1920 . The film is based on Lottie Blair Parker's play Annie Laurie , which was a national success in the late 19th century, and the play Way Down East by William A. Brady and Joseph R. Grismer .

Anna Moore, a young New England woman , falls in love with the wealthy Lennox Sanderson in Boston . He gets her to sleep with him with a fake wedding. When Anna becomes pregnant, Lennox admits that the wedding ceremony was a hoax and leaves her.
After the death of her mother and son, Anna, rejected by society because of their illegitimate child, finds work on Squire Bartlett's farm and falls in love with his son David. When Lennox shows up and Squire learns of Anna's past, he sends her away. In a snowstorm, Anna runs out onto a frozen river and threatens to drown in a waterfall. At the last minute she is saved by David. The film ends with the wedding of the two.

Far East premiered on September 3, 1920 at New York's 44th Street Theater . He grossed $ 4.5 million on a budget of $ 700,000 in the United States alone. Far to the east , it is Griffith's second most successful film and the fourth most successful silent film of all time.
In 1935 a remake was made under the same title, directed by Henry King with Rochelle Hudson as Anna Moore and Henry Fonda as David Bartlett.
