life and career

As a child, Rochelle Hudson was driven to an acting career by her mother. On her father's family side, she was a direct descendant of Henry Hudson . At the age of 14 she started working as a film actress for studios such as Fox Studios and RKO Pictures . Actually born in 1916, she made her film studio two years older so that she could appear in her early films as the male-courted Leading Lady . As early as 1931 she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars , an award for younger actresses who, according to an association of newspaper columnists, have the potential to become stars . Mostly she was cast as the lovely Girl Next Door in the 1930s , although she occasionally had opportunities for other roles.

In fact, Hudson became known to audiences in the following years through major appearances such as in the youth drama Wild Boys of the Road (1933) or as the older sister of Shirley Temple in Curly Top (1935). In 1934 Hudson had a more demanding role as the daughter of Claudette Colbert in the drama Imitation of Life . The following year she played the role of Cosette in Richard Boleslawski's lavish literary film adaptation, Die Elenden, based on the novel of the same name by Victor Hugo . In 1936 she played the title role in the comedy Poppy alongside star comedian WC Fields . However, she did not make the big breakthrough and by the end of the 1930s her career sank noticeably into B-films. In 1942 Hudson left Hollywood and worked with her then-husband, officer Hal Thompson, for a time as a spy in Mexico during World War II. As a married couple under a false name, they discovered a secret Nazi gas storage facility in Baja California .

She returned to Hollywood as a supporting actress in the late 1940s. There she took on the role of Natalie Wood's mother in the classic film in 1955 ... because they don't know what they're doing from Nicholas Ray . Until 1967 she appeared in films and television series at irregular intervals, including alongside Joan Crawford in The Straitjacket from 1964. In her final years she worked as a successful real estate agent before suddenly succumbing to a heart attack in 1972 at the age of 55. She was married four times, all marriages ended in divorce. When Hudson died, her mother was the only close relative still alive.

Rochelle Hudson has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
