Joseph Schildkraut (born March 22, 1896 in Vienna , Austria ; † January 21, 1964 in New York , USA ) was an Austrian-American film and theater actor . He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1937 for his appearance as Alfred Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola .

Life

Joseph Schildkraut, the son of the well-known actor Rudolph Schildkraut , was tutored by Albert Bassermann at a young age . In 1910 he accompanied his father on his tour to the USA and returned to Europe in 1913 . Schildkraut was trained by Max Reinhardt in Berlin and was soon known. After films in Germany and Austria in which he participated, Schildkraut moved to the USA in 1920. In 1921 he made his film debut in the USA. He also appeared in Peer Gynt in 1923 and Alice in Wonderland on Broadway in 1932 .

Joseph Schildkraut was a convincing character actor, who in 1938 was the second actor ever to win the Academy Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. He, Paul Muni (who received the Oscar for Best Actor in 1937 ), Maximilian Schell (1962) and Christoph Waltz (2010 and 2012) are the only Austrians so far to have been awarded an Acting Oscar.

Shortly after filming The Greatest Story Ever , he died of a heart attack at the age of 67 .

Private life

Schildkraut married for the first time on April 7, 1923. The marriage with the film actress Elise Bartlett was divorced on June 9, 1930. Schildkraut was married for 29 years to his second wife, Marie McKay, whom he married on May 27, 1932. She died while filming on February 17, 1962. In the summer of 1963 Schildkraut married Leonora Rogers, with whom he remained married until his death. Each of the three marriages remained childless.

Joseph Schildkraut collected letters, documents and photos from Anne Frank's family . A number of documents come from the possession of Otto Heinrich Frank , her father. The archive was auctioned on November 5, 2012 at Doyle auction house in New York and acquired by the Anne Frank House . Schildkraut's supporting role Oscar , which he received in 1937 for his role as Dreyfus in The Life of Emile Zola , was also auctioned . The hammer price was $ 164,520.
