Night Over India is a 1939 American adventure film directed by Clarence Brown. The script is based on the novel The Great Rain by Louis Bromfield .
action
Known as a philanderer, Tom Ransome has spent the past few years in India. His reputation piqued the interest of Fern Simon, the daughter of an American missionary. But Tom only sees a young, inexperienced girl in the distance.
At a party in the Maharaja's palace, Tom meets an ex-girlfriend again. Edwina married the wealthy but boring Lord Esketh. Tom realizes that Edwina, like himself, is superficial. When Edwina tries to seduce Tom's friend Major Rama Safti, Tom is alarmed. However, Safti, who works as a doctor, does not succumb to Edwina's charm.
The rainy season announces itself, the usual heat subsides. Tom begins to fall in love with Fern. When an earthquake collapsed a dam in Ranchipur, the tsunami caused a catastrophe. Lord Esketh and the Maharajah perish in the floods. The courageous Maharani accepts Tom as an adjutant in her service. Tom asks Fern for help. An epidemic breaks out, which Major Safti fights with the help of Edwina. Safti is impressed by her selflessness. But Edwina becomes a victim of the plague herself, Safti cannot save her. Safti can defeat the epidemic and becomes the new maharajah in the newly established state. Tom and Fern get married while Safti is left alone.
Reviews
The lexicon of the international film about the film: "Sensations and sentiment in a great exotic drama, whose special effects are more interesting than the theatrical conflicts."
Frank S. Nugent of the New York Times found that the novel had defied film adaptation. While Bromfield's actual intention was neglected, the film is an opportunity to show exciting visual effects.
The Time Out Film Guide, on the other hand, praises the experienced directing and the outstanding camera work. On the other hand, there is the chatty script.
Awards
The special effects by Fred Sersen and Edmund H. Hansen won an Oscar in 1940 , which was awarded for the first time in the category that year. The film received further nominations in the categories Best Equipment (William S. Darling and George Dudley), Best Cinematography (b / w) , Best Film Music , Best Sound (Edmund H. Hansen) and Best Editing .
background
The film premiered on September 9, 1939 in the United States. In Germany it did not appear in cinemas until July 29, 1949.
The 20th Century Fox had US dollars to raise about 2.6 million as a budget. The earthquake and flood scenes alone cost around 500,000 US dollars, with 350 workers employed for more than a month. The water consumption amounted to almost 100 million liters, which were used for the flood and rain scenes that took up over half of the days of shooting. Another cost item was the Maharaja's palace, which cost $ 75,000 to build and then destroy.
Bert Glennon, the film's original cameraman, has been replaced by Arthur C. Miller due to illness. It was the screen debut for Brenda Joyce, who later played Jane in five Tarzan films.
Jean Negulesco staged a remake in 1955 with Richard Burton as Major Safti, Lana Turner as Lady Edwina and Fred MacMurray as Tom Ransome under the title Der große Regen (OT: The Rains of Ranchipur ) .
