The 1940 Academy Awards took place on February 29, 1940 at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles . It was the 12th Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films from 1939.
With 13 nominations and eight awards (as well as two honorary Oscars), the film Gone with the Wind received the most awards. Director Victor Fleming , who was hailed as Best Director , stayed away from the award for unexplained reasons. Hattie McDaniel for Best Supporting Actress was the first African-American Oscar winner, while screenwriter Sidney Howard was the first posthumous Oscar winner.
An honorary Oscar for excellence in the use of color effects in Gone With the Wind went to William Cameron Menzies . The film was also awarded the Honorary Oscar for Technical Merit.
