Younger Frank Freeman (born December 14, 1890 in Greenville , Georgia , † February 5, 1969 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American film producer and cinema manager.

life and career

Y. Frank Freeman graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1910 . He came from an old southern family, but sold his parents' cotton business to open a movie theater in Fitzgerald . Freeman was successful and soon owned a whole chain of cinema. He later became a high-level producer at Paramount Pictures , serving for many years as vice president of production. Among other things, he made a name for himself as a critic of the strict censorship regulations of the Hays Code . He was chairman of the board of directors at Paramount until 1964 .

While Freeman is largely forgotten today, he was also a highly respected figure during his lifetime because of his public engagement - he was an active member of many organizations in the fields of sports and education. In 1957 he received the first Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his humanitarian service to the film industry . This honored him in 1967 with another honorary Oscar for his services to the Academy. Freeman also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the film category.

His son Frank Freeman junior (1915–1962) worked in the 1950s as a producer on films such as Battle of the Worlds and Storm over Persia .
