Radatice is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 812 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.

Martin's Church in Radačov

The municipality is located on the southern edge of the Šarišská vrchovina mountain range in the Svinka valley on both banks. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 295  m nm and is 14 kilometers away from Prešov .

Neighboring communities are Prešov in the north, Kendice in the east, Drienovská Nová Ves and Ličartovce in the southeast, Ľubovec (districts Ortubovec and Ruské Pekľany) in the south, Suchá Dolina in the west and Janov and Bzenov in the northwest.

Emmerich Church in Meretice

The present municipality was created in 1964 through the merger of the previously independent towns Meretice (until 1927 in Slovak also "Merečice"; in Hungarian Sárosszentimre - until 1895 Szentimre ) and Radačov (until 1927 in Slovak also "Radačovce"; Hungarian Radács ), which to this day each form a cadastral municipality .

Meretice was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1332 as Sanctus Emericus or Scenthemrych and was at that time a developed place in the territory of the Aba family. In 1427, 25 porta were recorded according to a tax register. In 1600 there were eight subject houses, an evangelical church, a mill and a parish. In 1828 there were 43 houses and 334 inhabitants.

Radačov was first mentioned in writing in 1261 as Radach and was owned by the local landed nobility, later including the Leles Provostry . In 1427 20 portals were recorded according to a tax register. In 1600 there were 40 subject houses, an evangelical church, a mill, a parish and a school. In 1828 there were 62 houses and 470 inhabitants.

Until 1918/1919, the places in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia and now Slovakia. On December 28, 1944, a damaged British Handley Page Halifax Mk V bomber wrecked in the then independent town of Meretice, killing the entire crew of eight men from the 301st RAF Fighter Squadron .

According to the 2011 census, there were 743 residents in Radatice, including 716 Slovaks , two Moravians and one Russian . 24 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

676 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 15 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, seven residents to the Evangelical Church AB, two residents to the Reformed Church and one resident to the Orthodox Church. 14 residents had no denomination and 28 residents had no denomination.
