Demjata (until 1927 Slovak "Demjaty" or "Demiata"; Hungarian Deméte ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,092 (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský and becomes the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The village is located below the southwestern tip of the Low Beskydy Mountains on both sides of the Sekčov River . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 299 m nm and is 17 kilometers from Prešov and 24 kilometers from Bardejov .
history
The place was first mentioned in writing in 1330 as Demeta . Initially, the village belonged to the estate of Scharosch Castle , from the 15th century to the landed gentry, like Bornemisza in the 16th or Bocskay in the 17th century. According to a tax register, a tax of 17 Porta was due in 1427 . In 1689 the village was deserted. In 1828 there are 75 houses and 553 inhabitants. The main sources of income were agriculture and sheep farming , and a quarry was also active in the 19th century . At that time Demjata suffered from poverty and waves of emigration.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. Today part of the population commutes to work in Prešov or Košice .

- Roman Catholic St. John the Baptist Church in baroque style from 1774
- Country palace "Semsey" from the 16th century, modified in 1764 in Baroque style from the original Renaissance style
- Country castle "Hámoš" from the 17th century, originally in the Renaissance style, modified in 1732 in Baroque style
Infrastructure
In Demjata there is a kindergarten, a primary school and a cultural center. The national road 545 ( Kapušany -Bardejov) and the railway line Kapušany pri Prešove-Bardejov (stops Demjata and Demjata obec) run through the village .
