Varhaňovce (until 1927 Slovak and "Varhaňovce"; Hungarian Vargony - until 1907 Várgony ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,516 (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District of, part kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the Kaschau valley basin and is traversed by the Olšavec brook in the Torysa river system. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 297 m nm and is 23 kilometers away from Košice and Prešov .
Neighboring municipalities are Brestov in the north, Bunetice in the east, Vtáčkovce in the southeast, Ortáše in the south and Šarišské Bohdanovce in the west.
history
Varhaňovce was first mentioned in writing in 1393 as a wargon . In 1427 17 porta are recorded in a tax register, the village belonged to the nobles of Ploské , later to the Segney , Melcer and Ujházy families . Shortly before the middle of the 16th century, the village was uninhabited, but was repopulated afterwards. In 1828 there were 53 houses and 403 inhabitants who lived from forestry and agriculture.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.
population
According to the 2011 census, there were 1,332 inhabitants in Varhaňovce, of which 1,016 were Slovaks, 135 Roma and one each Magyar and Russian. 179 residents gave no information in this regard. 945 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church, 180 residents supported the Greek Catholic Church and two residents supported the Protestant Church AB; one resident professed a different denomination. 20 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 184 residents was not determined.
