Štefanovce (German Stephan village , Hungarian Istvánvágás ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 199 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District of, part kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the middle of the Šarišská vrchovina mountains in the Štefanovský potok valley in the Svinka catchment area . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 580 m nm and is 22 kilometers away from Prešov .
The municipality consists of the 3.57 km² cadastral municipality of Štefanovce, where the capital is located, and the 1.681 km² cadastral municipality of Nové further north, which is located as an exclave between the municipalities of Renčišov , Uzovské Pekľany , Jarovnice and Hermanovce.
Neighboring municipalities are Lipovce in the north, Hermanovce in the east, Hendrichovce in the south, Fričovce in the southwest and Šindliar in the west.
history
Štefanovce was founded under German law by a mayor named Stephan and was first mentioned in writing in 1331 as villa Stefani , seven years later as Stephanwagasa . The place was then in the dominion of Svinia , later it was owned by families such as Berzeviczy , Szinyei and Mersey . In 1427 the village was taxed at 17 Porta , so it was then a medium-sized village. Later, many residents moved out or became impoverished, so that in 1600 the settlement consisted of only ten houses exclusively inhabited by subjects. In 1787 the village had 32 houses and 182 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 22 houses and 192 inhabitants who were employed as shepherds, farmers and linen weavers.
Until 1918/1919, the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Štefanovce had 218 residents, including 213 Slovaks . Five residents gave no information about their ethnicity .
211 residents supported the Roman Catholic Church and two residents supported the Greek Catholic Church. One resident was non-denominational and the denomination of four residents was not determined.
