Medzany (Hungarian Megye ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 936 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The municipality is located in the Šarišská vrchovina mountains in the Torysa Valley . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 320 m nm and is five kilometers from Veľký Šariš and 12 kilometers from Prešov .
Neighboring communities are Šarišské Michaľany in the north, Veľký Šariš in the east, Malý Šariš in the south, Župčany in the south-west, Svinia in the west and Ostrovany in the north-west.
history
Medzany was first mentioned in writing as Megyepotoka in 1248 and at that time already had a parish and a church. Until 1439 the village was in the dominion of the nearby Sharosh Castle . In 1427 19 portals were recorded in a tax register. In 1787 the village had 58 houses and 380 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 78 houses and 582 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, forest workers, basket makers and oil pressers.
Until 1918/1919, the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, 730 people lived in Medzany, 715 of them Slovaks and two Roma . 23 residents gave no information on ethnicity .
505 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 137 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 18 residents to the Brethren, 12 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, eight residents to the Orthodox Church, five residents to the Apostolic Church and three residents to the Evangelical Methodist Church ; one resident professed a different denomination. 17 residents had no denomination and 29 residents had no denomination.
