Mirkovce (Hungarian Mérk ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 1,366 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The community is located in the northern part of the Košická kotlina basin on the Balka brook . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 290 m nm and is 16 kilometers away from Prešov .
Neighboring municipalities are Žehňa in the north, Brestov in the south, Šarišské Bohdanovce in the south-west, Drienov in the west and Petrovany in the north-west.
history
The place was first mentioned in writing as Myrk in 1320 . In 1427 13 portals were recorded in a tax register. The Segney family became landowners in the 16th century , followed by the Piller family in the 18th century. In 1828 there were 56 houses and 435 inhabitants, whose main sources of income were agriculture and forestry. In 1863 the municipality was divided into Nižné Mirkovce (then Alsómérk in Hungarian ) and Vyšné Mirkovce (then Felsőmérk in Hungarian ).
Until 1918, the places in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In 1944 the two places merged to form the Mirkovce municipality.
population
According to the 2011 census, 1204 inhabitants lived in Mirkovce, 768 of them Roma, 331 Slovaks, four Czechs and one Russian. 100 residents gave no information in this regard. 991 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 39 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, 32 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, three residents to the Orthodox Church, two residents to the Baptists and one resident each to the Jehovah's Witnesses, the Congregational Church and the Czechoslovak Hussite Church; one resident professed a different denomination. 21 residents had no denomination and the denomination of 112 residents was not determined.
