Krížovany (until 1948 Slovak "Križoviany" - until 1927 "Križovany"; German Cross Village , Hungarian Szentkereszt ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia , with 370 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District of, part Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

Krížovany

The municipality is located in the Šarišská vrchovina mountains in the valley of the Križovanka brook in the Svinka catchment area . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 403  m nm and is 17 kilometers away from Prešov .

Neighboring municipalities are Chmiňany in the north, Ondrašovce in the east, Žipov in the southeast, Hrabkov in the south and Chminianske Jakubovany in the west.

history

Church of Exaltation of the Cross and bell tower

Krížovany was first mentioned in writing in 1318 as Scenthkerezth . In the same year a certain Urban from Perény acquired the local property. In 1340 a Franciscan monastery was founded in the village. In 1427 32 porta were listed in a tax register . In the 15th century Krížovany was a small town and at times had market rights.

In 1787 the village had 58 houses and 395 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 49 houses and 361 inhabitants who were employed as farmers, smearers and cattle farmers.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, agriculture was the main source of income for the population. After the Second World War, part of the population worked in industrial plants in cities such as Prešov and Krompachy .

According to the 2011 census, Krížovany had 367 residents, 347 of whom were Slovaks . 20 residents gave no information on ethnicity .

321 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 15 residents to the Evangelical Church AB and nine residents to the Greek Catholic Church. One resident was without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 21 residents.
