history

Barbarakirche in the place

Ovčie was first mentioned in writing in 1320 as Wytez Noua and at that time it was part of the dominion of Svinia . The name indicates that the place originated in the municipality of the neighboring village of Víťaz. In 1427 12 porta were recorded in a tax register. The name Ovčie did not appear in any form until the 16th century and was related to the inhabitants' original occupation as shepherds. Loosely translated the name means "sheep village" in German. From the 16th to the 18th century the village was owned by the families Hedry and Bertóty , in the 19th century the Tahy family owned local estates . In 1787 the village had 31 houses and 178 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 34 houses and 281 inhabitants who were employed as carters, farmers and linen weavers. In 1831 Ovčie suffered from a cholera epidemic .

Until 1918/1919, the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia. In the first Czechoslovak Republic, agriculture, seasonal forest work and broom making were the main sources of income for the population. After the Second World War, part of the population worked in industrial plants in cities like Krompachy .
