Kojatice (until 1948 Slovak "Kojetice" - until 1927 "Kojecice"; Hungarian Kajáta - older even Kajata ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,144 (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the Prešovský kraj , and is part of the traditional Šariš landscape .

Town view

The municipality is located in the Šarišská vrchovina mountains in the valley of the Svinka river , at the confluence of the river with the Malá Svinka . The municipal area is mostly hilly, partly deforested and has floodplain, brown and brown forest soils. The center of the village lies at an altitude of 346  m nm and is ten kilometers from Prešov .

In addition to the main town Kojatice, the Šarišské Lužianky part of the municipality south of the main town is part of the municipality, as is the settlement Kojatická Dolina further south .

Neighboring municipalities are Svinia in the north, Župčany in the northeast and east, Bzenov and Rokycany in the south, Brežany in the southwest and Chmiňany in the west.

history

Roman Catholic St. Andrew's Church

The place was first mentioned in writing in 1248 as Kajutha and at that time it was part of the dominion of Sharosh Castle . After that it was part of the Svinia estate, after 1317 the area became a royal estate. In 1355 today's part of the municipality Šarišské Lužianky was first mentioned in writing. In 1427 a tax of 39 porta was due, so Kojatice was a large village for the time. In the 15th century the owners came from the Rozgony family .

In the period from the 16th to the 18th century, various ecclesiastical institutions and Jesuits were landowners. In 1828 there were 42 houses and 338 inhabitants, whose main sources of income were agriculture and grain trade. The settlement of Kojatická Dolina was settled by Polish immigrants before the First World War , on a former property of the Sziney family .

Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Kojatice had 1,054 inhabitants, 904 of whom were Slovaks , 135 Roma , two Czechs and one Moravian , one Polish and one Ukrainian . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and nine residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

925 residents committed themselves to the Roman Catholic Church, 66 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, six residents to the Greek Catholic Church and two residents to the Orthodox Church. 16 residents had no denomination and 39 residents had no denomination.
