The šariš castle ( Slovak hrad Šarišský , Hungarian Sárosvár ) is the ruins of a hilltop castle in eastern Slovakia . It extends on the mountain Šarišský vrch ( 570  m nm ), a conical Andesite hill above the small town Veľký Šariš and the valley of the Torysa . The castle gives its name to the former Sáros county and today's Šariš region .

history

The castle was built in the 13th century, more precisely shortly after the devastating Mongol invasion in 1241, when the then King Béla IV ordered a castle building program. In 1245 the castle complex is mentioned as castrum Sarus . It protected a trade route in the Torysa Valley and was the original seat of the Sáros County. At first it belonged to the royal administration, but as part of feudalization, the castle came under the Soós dynasty , who were followers of the oligarch Matthäus Csák . After the lost battle of Rozhanovce in 1312, the castle was returned to royal possession. In 1436 the castle was pledged to the Perényi family , who also became members of the Sáros County. 1441–1460 the castle was occupied by Johann Giskra , but this was reversed and the Perényi family received the castle back as a donation. After supporting Prince of Transylvania Johann Zápolya during the battles for the Hungarian throne after the Battle of Mohács in 1526 , an imperial army took the castle in 1537. Since then the castle has been a fortress with a permanent garrison. The last owners came from the Rákóczi family who acquired the castle in 1642. The castle was badly damaged in a powder explosion in 1660 and then fell into disrepair. In 1687, the then commandant had the damaged castle buildings burned; since then the castle has been in ruins.
