Bzenov (until 1927 Slovak and "Bzinov" or "Bžany"; Hungarian Berzenke ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with 772 inhabitants (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský , and is the traditional landscape Šariš counted.

Center and church

The municipality is located in the southern part of the Šarišská vrchovina mountain range in the Svinka valley . The center of the village is at an altitude of 304  m nm and is 11 kilometers away from Prešov .

Neighboring communities are Prešov (district Cemjata) in the north, Radatice in the east, Janov in the southeast and south, Rokycany in the west and Kojatice in the northwest.

history

Bzenov was mentioned in writing for the first time in 1423 as a Bezenke , but it originated in the 14th century on the estate of the Čičarovce family. In 1427 the local estates (with 11 portals ) belonged briefly to the provost of Leles and, in the 16th and 17th centuries, to the city of Kosice and various noble families. In 1787 the village had 24 houses and 163 inhabitants, in 1828 there were 28 houses and 230 inhabitants who were employed as lumberjacks, farmers and manufacturers of agricultural tools.

Until 1918/1919, the place in Sáros County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the census in 2011 lived in Bzenov 754 inhabitants, of which 645 Slovaks , 49 Roma , two Russian women and Ukrainian and German . One resident indicated a different ethnic group and 54 residents gave no information about the ethnic group .

563 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 89 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, 24 residents to the Greek Catholic Church, three residents to the Jehovah's Witnesses, two residents to the Orthodox Church and one resident each to the Apostolic Church and the Evangelical Methodist Church ; seven residents professed a different denomination. 14 residents were without a denomination and the denomination was not determined for 50 residents.
