Chmiňany (Hungarian Monyhád - until 1907 Mochnya ) is a municipality in the east of Slovakia with a population of 1,002 (December 31, 2019) in Prešov District , part of the kraj Prešovský and becomes the traditional landscape Šariš counted.
geography
The village is located in the Šarišská vrchovina mountains in the valley of the Veľká Svinka river . The center of the village lies at an altitude of 378 m nm and is 13 kilometers from Prešov .
history
Chmiňany was first mentioned in writing as Mocnahac in 1330 . The village was then well developed with a parish and a mill and was part of the Svinia estate . After that there were different lords: in 1361 there were Augustinians of Hrabkov , in 1427 the Perényi family , in the 16th century Jesuits from Eperies and in the 17th century the city of Eperies itself. In 1789 there were 40 houses and 275 inhabitants, in 1828 33 houses and 253 inhabitants. They were farmers, carters and linen weavers.
Until 1918, the place in Sharosh County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary and then came to Czechoslovakia or now Slovakia.

According to the 2011 census, Chmiňany had 867 inhabitants, of whom 783 were Slovaks and one Czech. 83 residents gave no answer. 705 residents committed to the Roman Catholic Church, 55 residents to the Evangelical Church AB, seven residents to the Greek Catholic Church, two residents to the Seventh-day Adventists and one resident each to the Orthodox, Reformed and Evangelical Methodist churches. Six residents had no denomination and the denomination of 89 residents has not been determined.
