Cabreiros is a place and a former municipality in Portugal .

history

The locality of Tebilhão in the municipality of Cabreiros

The place was probably built long after the Reconquista and was a village within the lands of the Arouca monastery . In the royal registers from 1527, the municipality of Cabreiros is led with eleven households and the associated place Tebilhão with nine households.

In 1767 65 households were counted here. In 1930 the community had 480 inhabitants, the number of which grew to 923 in 1950. This was in connection with the ores mined here, in particular tungsten , which was important in the Second World War and which the officially neutral Salazar dictatorship also delivered to the Nazi regime . After that, the mines lost their importance and the population continued to decline.

With the territorial reform in Portugal in 2013 , the municipality of Cabreiros was dissolved and merged with Albergaria da Serra to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Cabreiros e Albergaria da Serra . Cabreiros became the seat of the municipality.
