geography

The Frecha da Mizarela waterfall

Albergaria da Serra is about ten kilometers south of the district town of Arouca, south of the Serra da Freita . The Caima rises here.

history

Finds prove a prehistoric settlement. Today's community was probably formed during the resettlement after the Reconquista . Mid-12th century founded here the Portuguese Queen Mathilde of Savoy a hostel for pilgrims, from which the place name is derived (Albergaria, port. For hostel). From 1257 the community belonged to the Arouca monastery .

The place was known as Albergaria de Monte Fuste at the beginning of the 13th century . In the course of time it was called Albergaria da Serra (dt. Mountain hostel), then "Nossa Senhora da Assunção de Albergaria" (dt. Our Lady of the Assumption of Albergaria), and from around the beginning of the 19th century Albergaria das Cabras (dt. Goat hostel). In the course of the 20th century, the place name returned to its current form.

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Albergaria da Serra and Cabreiros were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Cabreiros e Albergaria da Serra .

Culture and sights

The 75 meter high Frecha da Mizarela waterfall is increasingly becoming a tourist attraction.

In the Pedras Parideiras da Serra da Freita
Pedras Parideiras da Serra da Freita

The late Neolithic megalithic complex Mamoa da Portela de Anta dates from the third to fourth millennium BC. Chr.

The rock formation Pedras Parideiras da Serra da Freita, which consists of granite and other mineral stones, is a listed building. Biotite inclusions dissolve here from the granite rocks, which is what the name refers to.

Hardly any significant parts of the medieval inn that gave it its name have been preserved. However, it has been expanded several times. From one of these extensions comes a block of wall made of granite slabs that has been preserved and erected in 1641 and provided with engravings and writings. This Lápide da Albergaria da Serra is protected as an architectural monument.

The baroque parish church Igreja Paroquial de Albergaria da Serra (after its patron saint also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção , German: Church of Our Lady of the Assumption) is also a listed building.
