Kevin George Edward Whately (born February 6, 1951 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a British actor .

Life

Childhood, youth and education

Kevin Whately was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and grew up in Humshaugh , Northumberland . His mother Mary Whately, b. Pickering, was a teacher , his father Richard Commander of the Royal Navy . His maternal grandmother, Doris Phillips, singer . In addition, his great-great-grandfather Richard Whately was the (Anglican) Archbishop of Dublin.

Whately was educated at Barnard Castle School and studied acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London . His dialect stood in the way, among other things.

Private

Whately has been married to Madelaine Newton since April 1984 and has two children with her. His daughter Catherine (nickname Kitty , * 1983) played in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet his film daughter. His other daughter is called Kieran (* 1985). Whately lives with his wife near Milton Keynes . He is a fan of Newcastle United and Burnley FC , but generally finds rugby more interesting than football .

Career

Whately was an accountant and folk singer before his acting career ; he plays the guitar . He listens to music from Pink Floyd and Dire Straits , among others .

Whately played a sergeant in both the television series Miss Marple and Sherlock Holmes , and this was to be repeated in Inspector Morse from 1987 to 2000. There he stood as Lewis in front of the camera. From 2006 to 2015, this cop received his own series, Lewis - Der Oxford Krimi , in which Whately played the title role. In this new series, Lewis got Sergeant James "Jim" Hathaway, played by Laurence Fox , to the side.

He also played roles in the UK television series Peak Practice , Goodbye, Pet , Alas Smith & Jones , B&B , Shoestring , Angels and Juliet Bravo . He was also supposed to moderate the children's program Blue Peter . In the end, however, this fell to Peter Duncan.
