Supporting cast:

Sherlock Holmes (original title: the respective seasons have different titles, see there) is a television series from England commissioned and broadcast by the ITV station from 1984 to 1994 . It consisted of 6 seasons and 5 additional feature films. The production company was Granada Productions (now: ITV Studios). With this series, Jeremy Brett became one of the most famous Sherlock Holmes actors.

These were literary adaptations of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Arthur Conan Doyle , in which Jeremy played Brett Holmes and David Burke , from season 3 then Edward Hardwicke , was the Watson . The series was praised by critics and the public mainly because of the faithfulness to the work and the main actor Jeremy Brett. The producer was initially Michael Cox , later June Wyndham Davies . In Germany only 25 episodes were originally dubbed and broadcast. Since 2009 there have been - with the exception of four episodes - all episodes in German synchronization on DVD.

Emergence

In 1981 there was a conference of ITV companies . The point was that the station wanted another historic classic series, as it had already celebrated success with these series. Michael Cox was there because he was working for Granada and came up with the idea of a Sherlock Holmes series . The conference participants were enthusiastic and favored the Holmes series, even if it was foreseeable that it would be an extremely expensive series. Cox quickly put together a list of his personal favorite stories. A staff member from the studio did the same. When you compared the lists with each other, it became apparent that they were almost identical. The choice for filming was limited, however, as the copyrights of the stories from the volumes His Farewell Performance and Sherlock Holmes' Book of Cases were in the United States. It was also believed that the rights to the characters Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson were there, but this turned out to be wrong. Initially, there were only 39 of the 60 Holmes stories to choose from (including the "Dog of Baskerville"). Due to this copyright dispute, the production of the individual episodes (script, shooting) did not begin until 1983.

As it was already clear that the budget would skyrocket, Granada started a pre-sale in the USA. There was also a station there that showed interest (this is how one became aware of copyrights). So in order to be successful in the USA you needed a leading actor who was also known in the USA. "Somebody like Jeremy Brett," said Cox during the search. You couldn't find anyone like Jeremy Brett, so you asked him personally. Brett showed interest, but did not immediately accept, fearing that he would not get rid of the role later. B. Basil Rathbone . Brett accepted, played the part, and became the Sherlock Holmes.

action

With around three exceptions, all episodes adhere very closely to Arthur Conan Doyle's literary models . However, there are some factors that have been left out or replaced, e.g. B. the fact that Watson falls in love with the client Mary Morstan and eventually even marries her. This was omitted from the series as producers and writers found it too difficult to bring Holmes and Watson back together again and again when the Doctor was married. Also had the case The League of redheads changed so that at the end of Professor Moriarty (played by Eric Porter ) was the culprit. Even the noble bachelor (in the series is "The title of the coveted bachelor") was changed, but just so you could stretch it to 100 minutes and it was exciting.

production

David Burke dropped out with his last fall in 1985 because he wanted to spend more time with his family and accept a theater offer. But he himself proposed Edward Hardwicke as his successor, who was eventually taken. The exchange of the Watson actor went so well that some viewers in England did not even notice him at first and Hardwicke himself was approached with David on the set . Hardwicke first appeared in The Empty House from 1986.

The fall in the Reichenbachfall in his last case was actually filmed on site in Meiringen with two stunt people. Brett (Sherlock Holmes) was doubled by Marc Boyle and Porter (Moriarty) by Alf Joint . Producer Cox was in awe of their achievements. He said they were admirable as they risked their lives to film. The stunt is one of the most expensive and elaborate on British television. Holmes actor Jeremy Brett personally bought the champagne as a tribute to this stunt.

Broadcasts in Germany

As the first German broadcaster, GDR television broadcast the series in its second program from September 1987. In addition, the 1st and 2nd seasons were shown in a joint series entitled The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes with one episode per week. On the same slot, the third season ran from January 1988 under the title The Return of Sherlock Holmes .

GDR television also synchronized the 1st, 2nd and 3rd season itself. The role of Sherlock Holmes was u. a. by Arno Wyzniewski , by Dr. Watson spoken by Werner Ehrlicher . Scenes in which Sherlock Holmes' drug consumption was directly depicted were cut out or shortened and not synchronized. In the synchronized version of GDR television, these three seasons were later also shown in some third-party programs on ARD . GDR television also repeated the first and second seasons from 1988 and 1990 in its first and second programs.

The 5th season and the last three feature films were broadcast for the first time in Germany from April 1993 under the series title Sherlock Holmes . The remaining episodes and films have not yet been shown on German television, but have been dubbed for a DVD release by Koch Media .
