action

A dangerous criminal blackmailed key members of London society with compromising letters. Sherlock Holmes is asked to prevent further extortion and begins an investigation with his partner Watson. You'll soon find out the blackmailer's name and address. First, Holmes and Watson try to get the letters back through negotiations with the blackmailer Charles Augustus Milverton, but they fail. When Holmes sees no other option but to steal the letters, Holmes and Watson break into Milverton. But others are also trying to stop the blackmailer. Charles Augustus Milverton is shot dead by one of his previous victims, Lady Diana, while Holmes and Watson are hiding behind a curtain.

Differences from the original story

  • Mycroft Holmes is not mentioned in the original
  • The relationship between Sherlock Holmes and the maid was embellished in the film
  • Colonel Dorking's blackmail is also embellished
  • In the film, Milverton's killer is given the name Lady Diana and can be seen several times before the murder. In the book, Holmes and Watson are silent about their identity and only hint to the reader that it is a noblewoman.

Emergence

When Granada Television decided to only produce feature films in the Sherlock Holmes series, novels would have had to be shortened if they had been made into a film. Instead, the studio decided to film and embellish short stories. The short story Charles Augustus Milverton was chosen for the third feature-length film. Since the story was too short for a 100 minute film adaptation, elements such as B. the blackmail of Colonel Dorking or the love affair between Holmes and Milverton's housemaid, which surprisingly does not slow the film down.
