Robert Hardy

Timothy Sydney Robert Hardy CBE (born October 29, 1925 in Cheltenham , Gloucestershire , England - † August 3, 2017 in London ) was a British actor .

Life

Robert Hardy's father, Henry Harrison Hardy, was the director of Cheltenham College from 1919 to 1931 , one of the first major boarding schools in Victorian England . Robert Hardy first studied in Oxford in JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis literary studies . He completed his studies with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In 1949 Hardy's acting career began at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater in Stratford-upon-Avon with classic plays such as William Shakespeare's Henry V.

Hardy became known to a wide audience from 1978, in the role of the veterinarian Siegfried Farnon in the BBC series All Creatures Great and Small (German: The Doctor and the Love of Cattle , broadcast by ARD from 1979 ). Later in his career, he starred as Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge in the Harry Potter films. He ended his stage career in 2013 after breaking ribs in a fall playing Winston Churchill in a performance of Peter Morgan's play The Audience .

In addition to his acting activities, Hardy dealt with medieval warfare , in particular with the history of the longbow . He was the author of two books and owned a collection of historical items on the subject. He was called in as an expert in assessing the findings on the Mary Rose .

Robert Hardy was from 1952 to 1956 with Elizabeth Fox, the daughter of the penologist Lionel Wray Fox (1895-1961), married. His second marriage to the costume designer Sally Pearson, a daughter of actress Gladys Cooper , lasted from 1961 to 1986. His marriages resulted in three children. Hardy was friends with actor Richard Burton .

Hardy died on August 3, 2017, at the age of 91 in Denville Hall, a retirement home for actors in London.

In 1981, Hardy was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II . In 1990 he was elected Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London (FSA) in London .
