Edward Hardwicke (born August 7, 1932 in London - † May 16, 2011 in Chichester , West Sussex , England) was a British actor who was mainly known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson became famous in the British television series The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes .

Live and act

Edward Hardwicke was born as the only child of the actor couple Cedric Hardwicke and Helena Pickard . Hardwicke made his theatrical debut at the age of seven, and in 1943, when he was ten, he played alongside Spencer Tracy in Hollywood in the war film Battle in the Clouds . A year later, Hardwicke's family returned to England, where he graduated from school and served in the Royal Air Force from 1951 to 1952 . After his military service, Hardwicke attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

In 1953 Edward Hardwicke starred in the British film Hell Below Zero , and a year later he made his debut in London's West End . Hardwicke played at the Bristol Old Vic , the Oxford Playhouse and the Nottingham Playhouse before joining Laurence Olivier's Ensemble at the National Theater in 1964 . In the following decades Hardwicke was a busy theater actor, he also appeared in supporting roles in several cinema and television films.

Hardwicke's final, partly international breakthrough came with the role of Dr. Watson in a television series of Granada Television , entitled Sherlock Holmes , in which Jeremy Brett , the role of Sherlock Holmes had taken over. Hardwicke only came in with the third season in 1986 because the previous Watson actor David Burke no longer wanted to play the role. Hardwicke then starred in more than 20 Holmes film adaptations, including The Sign 4 and The Hound of Baskerville .

Hardwicke died of cancer in May 2011 at the age of 78. He was married twice; his first marriage to actress Anne Iddon had two daughters. His daughter Emma Hardwicke was also active as an actress.
