Sophie Thompson (born January 20, 1962 in London ) is a British actress .

life and career

Sophie Thompson is a daughter of actors Eric Thompson and Phyllida Law ; actress Emma Thompson is her older sister.

Thompson studied at the Bristol Old Vic Theater School. She made her debut in 1978 in the television series A Traveler in Time . In the television drama Secret Orchards (1979) she played a bigger role. In the television war drama Tumbledown (1988) she appeared on the side of Colin Firth ; in 21 (1991) she was seen in a larger role alongside Patsy Kensit .

Thompson played the bride of the second wedding in the 1994 comedy Four Weddings and a Funeral, starring Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell . In the film drama Tanz in die Freiheit (1998) she starred alongside Meryl Streep as her sister. For her role in the comedy Relative Values (2000) starring Julie Andrews and Edward Atterton , she was nominated for the 2001 British Supporting Actress of the Year for the London Critics Circle Film Award . As a cast member of the comedy Gosford Park (2001) she received the 2002 Broadcast Film Critics Association Award , the Florida Film Critics Circle Award , the Online Film Critics Society Award , the Satellite Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award , and she was also for the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award nominated.

In 2006 and 2007, Thompson starred in 87 episodes of the television series EastEnders . For this role she was nominated for the 2007 British Soap Award for Villain of the Year . In 2008 she was nominated for the same award in two categories. 2010 followed by appearances in Eat Pray Love and the penultimate film in the Harry Potter film series , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1 . Subsequently, Thompson worked primarily in series and film productions for television, for example in 2016 with a recurring role in the series Jericho .

Thompson received the Laurence Olivier Award in 1999 for her role in the musical Into the Woods . She has been married to actor Richard Lumsden since 1995 and has two sons.
