action
The action takes place in Ireland in 1936 and is told from the perspective of Michael Mundy, who was a little boy at the time. His mother Christina Mundy and her unmarried sisters Kate, Margaret, Rose and Agnes live together on an estate. Only Kate has a good job teaching, while Christina and Margaret are unemployed.
The brother of the five women, Jack, is a priest. He is returning from a mission in Africa where he spent 25 years. Michael's father Gerry Evans comes to visit and proposes to Christina. He announces that he has volunteered for action in the Spanish Civil War . Evans travels to Spain, is wounded a little later and dies.

Brid Brennan won the Irish Film and Television Award in 1999 . Meryl Streep, Frank McGuinness, Kenneth MacMillan and Best Feature Film were nominated for the same award.
