Gerard McSorley

Gerard McSorley ( Irish Gearóid Mac Somhairle ; * 1950 in Omagh , County Tyrone ) is a Northern Irish actor .

Gerard McSorley is an internationally known character actor in theater, film and television. He is a descendant of John McSorley, the founder of McSorley's Old Ale House , the oldest Irish pub in New York . He lives in Gweedore , County Donegal where he wants to learn the Irish language.

After attending a Christian Brothers School in his hometown, he moved to St Columb's College in Derry . He then graduated from Queen's University in Belfast , where he was taught by Seamus Heaney , among others . In his acting career, he appeared in many Hollywood films such as Braveheart and In the Name of the Father .

In 2004 he took the lead role in the television drama Omagh , which illustrated the aftermath of the 1998 Omagh bombing . He is also known for his portrayal of "Father Todd unctious" in an episode of Channel 4 - sitcom Father Ted .

The role of Queenan in The Departed , for which he was cast, he had to turn down. His colleague Martin Sheen took over the role instead.

Gerard McSorley was married to Ann Harrison Richie. The marriage, which had three children, is now divorced.
