Omagh ( Irish : An Ómaigh ) is a city in Northern Ireland . It is located about 50 km south of Derry City and 80 km west of Belfast and has a population of 21,380 (2006). It was the capital of the historic County of Tyrone and is now one of the two administrative centers of the districts of Fermanagh and Omagh .

history

The Omagh area has been populated for millennia. The oldest evidence of a farm belonging to the Neolithic inhabitants comes from the residential area near Ballynagilly and is dated 3,700 BC. Dated. A mythological tale about Fionn mac Cumhaill's daughter Gráinne also takes place here . An abbey was founded in 792 .

On 15 August 1998, the committed Real IRA on Market Street a bomb with 29 deaths (and two unborn babies) and injured 200 or greater. No other attack in the Northern Ireland conflict resulted in more victims.

Two British soldiers were killed in an attack in March 2009. In April 2010, one person was injured in a car bomb attack. On April 2, 2011, a bomb attack took place in Omagh, in which a Northern Irish police officer was killed.

tourism

Of particular tourist interest is the salmon fishing in the rivers Drumragh and Camowen , which unite in the city to form the River Strule , which despite protective walls regularly overflows its banks and causes more or less violent flooding. North of the city are the Sperrin Mountains , a popular hiking area . Here in Gortin Glen is the Ulster History Park (closed since 2005) and further west of the Ulster-American Folk Park , both open-air museums .

At the An Creagan Visitor Center tourist information center and the Sperrin Heritage Center , visitors can learn about the city's history and myths.
