action

Michael Connolly lives at the Carrigmore Home for the Disabled. He has cerebral palsy, sits in a wheelchair and can only make himself understood with the help of a letter board. When Rory O'Shea comes into the home, Michael's life changes. Rory has Duchenne muscular dystrophy and is also in a wheelchair. But he doesn't want to recognize the rules in the home that Michael would never have questioned: He wants to listen to music when and as loudly as he wants, and he wants to be able to wear his hair however he wants. Rory and Michael become friends. Rory is the only one who can understand Michael without a letter board.

Rory desperately wants to have the right to live independently, but his applications are repeatedly rejected by the competent authority on the grounds that he is irresponsible and so he is left with the home. At every opportunity Rory tries to show Michael the world outside the home. They go to pubs and nightclubs, talk to girls, and Rory dances in his wheelchair. They also get to know Shioban.

Finally, Michael submits an application to be allowed to live independently, which is approved. On the grounds that he needs Rory as a translator, he finally moves into Michael's handicapped-accessible apartment, which is paid for by his father. Since they still need care, they hire Shioban, who has previously cleared shelves in a supermarket. The three get along very well. Both Michael and Rory fall in love with Shioban. While Michael is hopeful, Rory does not have the courage to show his feelings.

At a party, Michael asks Shioban to dance with him. She agrees, but the situation escalates. Shioban has to tell Michael clearly that she doesn't feel anything for him. He's devastated. Shioban then organizes a new caregiver and leaves.

At night Michael finds Rory feverish and bathed in sweat in his bed and has him taken to the hospital. Rory has pneumonia, which is the death sentence if he is ill. Doctors give him a day or two. Michael wants to grant him a wish and with the help of Shioban submits a new application for Rory for the right to live independently. The application is approved, but Rory dies before they can tell him about it.

In the last scene, Michael is in Rory's room. He hears Rory asking "Are we going out?" And Michael is seen smiling and driving through the streets alone.

Reviews

“A difficult subject. And yet director Damien O'Donnell has made a touching, sometimes even funny film. Conclusion: precise dialogues, excellent actors "

- cinema.de

"True enough, director Damien O'Donnell adds a healthy dose of saline sentiment to his engaging tale of disadvantaged Dubliners striking out on their own. Thanks to strong performances and some bracing one-liners, O'Donnell makes a convincing case for equality for disabled people in society, though casting able-bodied actors as his wheelchair-driving protagonists unavoidably weakens his argument.
