Roman lime kiln between Senningen and Senningerberg

Senningen ( lux . : Senneng  ; French : Senningen) is a village in the municipality of Niederanven (lux .: Nidderaanwen) in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Luxembourg . The village has 480 inhabitants (as of January 2013, in 2005 there were 370 inhabitants) and a high number of Armenian residents.

history

Senningen has been settled for thousands of years. There is a Roman lime kiln , which was found in 1938 between the districts of Senningen and Senningerberg . On the basis of a piece of wood that was found next to the lime kiln, an operating period at least around 65 and 75 AD could be determined. Since there are no lime deposits in the area, it is assumed that this location was chosen primarily because of the good transport connections, as the Roman road between Reims and Trier ran here and Trier was probably a good sales market for quicklime .

Due to its location at the foot of the Luxembourg sandstone plateau and the associated abundance of water, the municipality of Niederanven and the village of Senningen were one of the municipalities with the most mills in Luxembourg. At the beginning of the 19th century there were twelve mills here, which were in operation simultaneously for around 20 years. Three of these mills were demolished, nine still exist as buildings. In Senningen alone there were 6 mills that were driven by the Senninger Bach, which flows through the village from west to east. These were: the Funck paper mill, Lamort paper mill, Bannmühle von Senningen, the sawmill, the oil mill and the Tabourain paper mill (also: Piersmühle). The Bannmühle was originally a flour mill and was expanded to include an oil mill in the 19th century. It is considered one of the oldest mill foundations in Luxembourg.

Senningen Castle emerged from a manor house whose owners operated three such water mills (the mills were demolished around 1882).
